abian was discovered in 1957 by Bob Marcucci and Peter DeAngelis, owners of Chancellor Records. At the time, record producers were looking to the South Philadelphia neighborhoods in search of teenage talents with good looks, and Frankie Avalon, also of South Philly, suggested Fabian as a possibility.
With songwriters Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, Fabian released a series of hit singles for Chancellor Records including "I'm a Man", "Hound Dog Man", a #9 hit in the U.S., "Turn Me Loose" (U.S. #9), and his biggest hit, "Tiger", which reached number 3 in the U.S. charts. Other singles that charted included "String Along", "About This Thing Called Love" and "This Friendly World", which reached #12 on the U.S. charts.
His career in music basically ended after he bought out of his contract with Marcucci after signing a seven-year contract with 20th Century Fox. During the payola scandal of the 1960s, Fabian testified before Congress that his recordings had been doctored electonically to significantly improve his voice.

My bedroom walls were covered with pictures of my Fabian from teen magazines. Early 80's he was in an outdoor concert in San Diego The Wild Animal Park.... He asked if anyone wanted to come up on stage and stroll!!! Are you kidding me in a split second there I was on stage he held my hand for a brief moment.... Time stood still lol swoooon and then we did the stroll to this song!!! The coolest memory and here I am 77 still doing the stroll!!!

I met him around 1962 or '63. My father worked at a major record distributor in Boston and would take me to work with him on the weekends. When I met him I grabbed a Fabian album and asked him to autograph it for my little sister. I gave her the album and she literally kissed the signature off the album in about six months!

To be fair to the teen idols who sprang up while Elvis was in uniform, they could have emerged even if Elvis had never been drafted. Even if a couple of his songs were played every hour on stations which played to teen audiences, that still left lots of time for other songs to be played. Also - with Elvis making no TV appearances after his third appearance on Ed Sullivan early in January, 1957 - that meant TV appearances were available for the up-and-comers.

My hat's off to the people who worked with Fabian, and prepared him for appearances like this. Look at the way he carries himself, and the way he looks in to the camera. Not hard to understand why this good-looking guy with the brown eyes and big head of hair was popular with teenage girls. They imagined have a boyfriend like Fabian singing to them - didn't matter how well he sang.

I remember Fabian and this fine song from when I was a kid of 7 or so years old in the Detroit area. He has a good voice sings naturally, seems like a good guy to me. As the 60's came on and The Beatles showed up. I, as many guys , went for them and the hair style/long and so the years went by and here we are

I know that many feel that somehow the pop years of the late 50s and early 60s were somehow "rescued" by the Beatles, but truly not so. Those pop years were wonderful years for some really great stars and some really FUN music. The sound and the era stood on its own merit and does not deserve to be compared to other genres / times. I for one love the pop sounds of Fabian, Frankie Avalon, Bobby Rydell, Annette, Neil Sedaka, Johnny Tillitson, Chubby Checker, Brenda Lee, Connie Francis and all the rest! :----)

Many of my favorite singers, Neil Sedaka, Paul Anka, Gene Pitney, Roy Orbison, Brenda Lee, Johnny Tillotson, Connie Francis, Linda Scott, all the Bobbys, the girl groups, etc. were popular during this period, which was an incredible time for pop music. There were a few singers, like Fabian, who weren't so great (and it's no secret that he was made into a singing star by his manager solely based on his looks) but it was incredible how much good music there was in the late '50's and early '60's. I hope we see a lot more of it on this channel!

I've noticed how music of the early 50s, is cast aside in exchange for rock and roll....the early 1960s is overlooked by the British invasion and more rock sounds of the later 60s....And early 70s music is lessened by the later rock sounds and disco music. A LOT of great music can be found in those early decades.

No, he really couldn't sing - they gave him many vocal lessons but it didn't help much. Have to say though, that it took GUTS to sing LIVE on The Ed Sullivan Show when I'm sure he knew he couldn't sing well at all - other performers of that time weren't necessarily great (and some WERE great) but honestly, I've nothing against Fabian (he was better at acting) but he was not a singer.

I'm sure Fabian realized that but for me, back then, and even now his voice seemed perfect for the songs he sang. You may not have seen this as it's nowhere on youtube anymore, I'm sure it's been taken down forever. It was Paul McCartney being interviewed on some TV show, and the interviewer asked him about the teen idols of the 50's, and he trashed the hell out of especially, Frankie Avalon and Fabian, calling them no talent, blah, blah, can't sing etc. I actually still love those guys songs these guys made back then, and I'm still pissed at McCartney for making those remarks, but it showed what a classless jackass he is!!! And I'm sure someone who's in his circle must've seen that video, told him about it, and he bought the rights to the video interview and whoosh, the video is gone! Ed Sullivan had a strict rule that all musical performers on his show would use their own voices when performing. Nothing pre-recorded. And playing their own instruments as well, if they had played them on their original recordings. When the Beatles and Beach Boys appeared, for example, their own voices and instruments were heard.

The one who was big on lyp-synching was Dick Clark, amongst others. Almost every performer or group that appeared on his show lyp-synchted their songs.

Look, folks.....Fabian Forte didn't get signed to Chancellor Records for the voice. Strictly due to the looks and he'd be the first to admit it. Met him in 1985 at an outdoor oldies concert and I will say he worked the stage much harder with more energy than his colleagues Frankie Avalon and Bobby Rydell (who are way better singers). Bottom line - good singer, no. Good looking guy who got the ladies, yes.

Not a bad singer, but nothing special either. Better then Justin Bieber though. What I want to know is why didn’t they immediately make him a movie star, instead of singing? That’s where good looking people go. The problem with him is, his managers wanted to turn him into a Elvis type, who can belt out a rock n roll tune, when they should’ve had him sing pretty, simple ballads like Frankie Avalon. Avalon, wasn’t the best singer, but the songs they gave him were simple and sweet and didn’t require great singing. So they should’ve turned Fabian into a romantic rock n roll singer.

....well they did - no, he was not a Singer - but I guess I would have to say he did the best he could with what most singers would say is practically no singing voice at all to speak of - however he did go on to do movies and had a good screen image -
