Caruso
Fabian Lara Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When a man loves a woman
Can't keep his mind on nothin' else
He'd trade the world
For a good thing he's found
If she is bad, he can't see it
She can do no wrong
Turn his back on his best friend
If he puts her down

When a man loves a woman
Spend his very last dime
Trying to hold on to what he needs
He'd give up all his comforts
And sleep out in the rain
If she said that's the way
It ought to be

When a man loves a woman
I give you everything I've got (yeah)
Trying to hold on
To your precious love
Baby please don't treat me bad

When a man loves a woman
Deep down in his soul
She can bring him such misery
If she is playing him for a fool
He's the last one to know
Loving eyes can never see

Yes when a man loves a woman
I now exactly how he feels
'Cause baby, baby, baby

I am a man
When a man loves a woman

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Caruso" by Fabian Lara are not related to "When a man loves a woman" but I can explain "When a man loves a woman" by Percy Sledge. It describes the depth of love that a man feels for a woman. When a man truly loves a woman, he becomes so absorbed in her that everything else fades away. Even if the woman isn't perfect and makes mistakes, he will still love her and give up anything to keep her. He becomes willing to sacrifice his own comfort and security to just be near her. In fact, the song hints that a man in love is almost blinded by devotion and is even unable to see his partner's flaws. He's ready to do anything for her even when it results in his own misery. The culmination of his feelings is described as a soul-deep experience, something that can't be seen, only felt. The song serves to show the intensity of love and worship that a man can feel for a woman.

Poi all'improvisso uscì una lacrima

Confondono i pensieri

Caruso
Here, where the sea shimmers and the wind gusts strongly
On an old terrace in front of the Gulf of Sorrento
A man embraces a girl after she had cried
Then clears his throat 1 and begins the song again

I love you very much
So much, so much, you know
It is a bond from now on
That frees the blood inside the veins, you know

He saw the lights in the middle of the sea, he thought of the nights there in America
But they were only the fisher men's lamps and the white wake from a propeller
He felt the pain in the music and he rose from the piano
But when he saw the moon emerging from a cloud, even death seemed sweeter to him
He looked the girl in the eyes, those eyes, green like the sea
Then suddenly a tear fell, and he believed he was drowning

I love you very much
So much, so much, you know
It is a bond from now on
That frees the blood inside the veins, you know

The power of opera, where every drama is a hoax
With a little make-up and with mimicry, you are able to become another
Thus everything becomes small even the nights there in America
You turn and see your life like the wake from a propeller

I love you very much
So much, so much, you know
It is a bond from now on
That frees the blood inside the veins, you know

I love you very much
So much, so much, you know
It is a bond from now on
That frees the blood inside the veins, you know
inside the veins, you know

Thank you so much for this information, Martin s!  I would that you listen to these words, which have haunted me for a number of months now, but these are the words I noted concerning Lara Fabian's rendition of Dalla's "Caruso," which had me asking questions such as this one I posted February 6th 2015, seeking anybody who could help me:

"And again, Lara's lovely voice is hypnotic; her passion felt within the words of the music!  I am not able to know dor sure, but I would love to have another who understands EXACTLY what is being said within the music of this language - Is it not Italian? - please give to me, exactly what is found within this language, as perfectly as possible, what is most assuredly going on within this piece of music.  I feel within the presentations of Pavarroti and Lara Fabian, so much more is being said in the cadency of the music, than I am hearing within the English subtitles.

Would someone able to pick out the true story from within the language being sung, please write the "hidden aspects of the music," in English as well, so that I am able to ascertain whether or not I am simply dreaming, or that there is a hidden message in the languages, that I am not hearing in the English, but surely throughout the music: would you please do this for me?

I feel an overtone of actual death occurring in the music; either the death of the man singing to the woman with the green eyes, or the death of the woman with the green eyes, I do not know which one is dying: is this also being pushed forward in the language, and not being noted within the English subtitles?

Or is it the awfulness of that which is not actual death, but possibly that which is greater than actual death, but a time of either of these, the one or the other, having to live life without the one that is dying able to live beside him/her any longer due to his/her death, and the one living, hating to have to do so - live without the other being there?  Am I simply dreaming these thoughts, placing them there when they aren't there truly, using the imagination, or is this emplied within the song "Caruso," and I have no actual/historical understanding of the reason why I see these things in another language, being brought to my soul through the music?

If you can understand that which I am saying, and can help me in English, please do.  Maybe this is being seen and heard by all who love music - I do not know - however, it would be great to understand, finally, that I might put this all to sleep in the knowledge of its true story."

And so thank you Martin, as her rendition of "Caruso," to my mind and heart, which are those of a musician - a vocalist and percussionist - brought forth in me feelings of actual death occurring, as you can read in the above!  Your enlightenment of the reasons for the verbiage, now cause me great pain, as well as pleasure, in being able to discern through the music and the passion of Lara's presentation, a deeper quality in the music, that spoke to me of imminent death occurring, and I was able to even note the quality of death by saying:

"I feel an overtone of actual death occurring in the music; either the death of the man singing to the woman with the green eyes, or the death of the woman with the green eyes, I do not know which one is dying: is this also being pushed forward in the language, and not being noted within the English subtitles?   Or is it the awfulness of that which is not actual death, but possibly that which is greater than actual death, but a time of either of these, the one or the other, having to live life without the one that is dying able to live beside him/her any longer due to his/her death, and the one living, hating to have to do so - live without the other being there?  Am I simply dreaming these thoughts, placing them there when they aren't there truly, using the imagination, or is this emplied within the song "Caruso," and I have no actual/historical understanding of the reason why I see these things in another language, being brought to my soul through the music?"

Thank you for having answered me long before I made my predicament known on youtube!  Now I may close the book on my dilemma, but this, even as I choose to open the book on Lara Fabian a good deal further!

Caruso has to be the most legendary opera song

@000tyr

It's an opera song?

@tuuretamminen9142

I don't think there's ever recorded more perfect single live vocal performance. The passion and emotion, perfect flawless technique and The most Beautiful Voice. Lara. Just speechless. And it's not even her own song...

@Helen-oy7dx

Superb,I don't think I drew breath the whole time in case I missed something. Captivating and raw and deep and so motivated ❤

@tuuretamminen9142

@Helen So you're unconscious now...😁😁 Yes, she truly captivates you into somekind of trance...Especially when she sings in italian or french.

@christinedavidmcgregor6010

I agree she is my favourite female rendition of this beautiful, heartsearing song and Jonathon Antoine is my favourite male artist for Caruso

@alexandrudanielmangiurea506

Is a good version but honestly, Pavarotti' s version is better

@tuuretamminen9142

As much as I love Pavarotti, this lady is the only one for me who knows how to nail it. She presents herself as a narrator, her entire body language screams as if she experiences these bittersweet moments between those two lovers. It is just utter perfection, the voice is so clear, so powerful and at the same time, it weighs you down. It is just a masterpiece, bravo.

@ArkanphelLA2

By far the best version of that song, her feelings pierce you through your heart.
