Bent But Not Broken
Face to Face Lyrics

Every time we buy the lie?
Why don't we pursue the truth,
Even when it's hard to do?
And all we want is to believe,
It's okay if we're slightly deceived,
Maybe we're missing the point that we're listening
To liars and thieves.
Some things will never change.
Why are we so slow to say,
They've figured out another way?
Why are we so quick to judge,
Anyone who's not like us?
And all we want is to believe,
It's okay if we're slightly deceived,
Maybe we're missing the point that we're listening
To liars and thieves.
You're bent but you just won't break.
Some things will never change.
You said that you would never be in lock step,
Walking with the rest of them.
I barely recognize if there is anything left of you,
And I want something more.
You're bent but you just won't break.
Some things will never change.
You're bent but you just won't break.
Some things will never change.
The lyrics of Face to Face's "Bent But Not Broken" comment on the deception and misunderstandings that come with blindly accepting lies and the difficulty in pursuing truth, even when it seems hard to do. The song critiques society's tendency to listen to "liars and thieves" and avoid those who are different. It encourages listeners to recognize their own faults in blindly following dogma and to strive for something more.
The opening lines, "Why are we still so surprised, every time we buy the lie? Why don't we pursue the truth, even when it's hard to do?" suggest a sense of collective disillusionment with the prevalence of falsehoods in society. The lyrics posit that perhaps we are "missing the point" by listening to those who deceive us, rather than seeking to uncover truth for ourselves. The chorus, which declares that "you're bent but you just won't break" speaks to individuals who have been tested and are still standing. The repetition of the phrase "some things will never change" implies that while we may not be able to change every part of society, we can resist the temptation to blindly follow others.
In the second verse, the song continues to critique society's tendency to judge and condemn those who are different. The line "you said that you would never be in lock step, walking with the rest of them," suggests a desire for individuality and a rejection of conformity. However, it also implies a sense of alienation from those who walk in "lock step." The personal nature of the lyric "I barely recognize if there is anything left of you," speaks to the loss of identity that can come with blindly following others.
Overall, "Bent But Not Broken" is a call to reconsider our values and beliefs and to resist the temptation to blindly follow others. It acknowledges the challenges of pursuing truth but encourages listeners to strive for something more.
