I've only ever reported hate speech or threat of violence twice on Facebook, in both instances the comments were pretty clear and could not be mistaken as sarcasm or comedy, both times Facebook said it didn't violate their terms of use. Facebook is a joke.

It was exposed not that long ago that FB staff were trained to not take down videos of child abuse, even violence child abuse with an adult straight up beating the kid (https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-44859407)
Knowing that it shouldn't surprise you that the AI won't take down even pictures of violent bloody rape of children. It also ignores very direct death threats a whole lot, and we're talking in english so there's no excuse. Like Facebook is BAD at taking down heinous things. They need to fucking fix their shit.

Got rid of it a long time ago. While I'm very introverted and enjoy my own company and pretty much never get lonely, Facebook actually made me feel that way. I was technically talking to my friends and family, but I felt so empty inside because I could not hear their voice and see them laugh when I said something stupid or just get body language feedback...once the Trump era hit it was over. So much disinformation and stupid opinions everywhere, then you realize it's not even worth trying to argue with Trump supporters...I cut them out of my life completely. I had my profile deactivated for a long time but I actually went and deleted it fully after Facebook was found to have done all those morally reprehensible things during the election...no going back.

I do not miss Facebook but I miss life before social media.

That's actually pretty understandable since they need a way to make money. As long as you are informed that they are using your information I don't really have a problem with it. To a point anyway. Basically you're not getting it for free. Instead you are paying for it with your information.
Otherwise just don't use it. Or possibly use a VPN. Also don't ever post anything you're not willing to share with the entire world.
But most of all take what you see/hear with at least fifty pounds of salt.

It's the reason I didn't visit Myanmar on my trip through Asia last year. It was all going on at the time, many backpackers were still visiting, despite the reports of genocide. I actively tried persuade people to postpone their trips. It's an awful thing that happened there, but despite all that shit people would still go. If people will stand up against something stupid like a Nike commercial, can we at least all come together when something horrific like this is happening.

I do not agree with you BRTxNL. I have been visiting Myanmar in September 2017 when the riots were violent in the north west of the country. I Think people there just do not see the proplems that are there. I think there is just a big lack of education and reliable newsfeed. I Think it would be better if even more people are visiting the country and are discussing those things.

This happened 2 years ago in Indonesia: During the governational election of Jakarta, Indonesia, a surge of hate speech and xenophobia posts inflitrated to many of our facebook timeline. Promoting a toxic division between the natives and Chinese Indonesian. Later it was proven that the xenophobic posts were backed up by the opponent political party who were taking an advantage of facebook's flawed system. It was utterly toxic, that caused an actual riot between many ethnicities & religions. This is why facebook needs to fix this issue fast. Especially political parties who are using fake news as a tool to "win". It's almost the presidential election next year, i hope these fake news epidemic will be cured soon before then

The thing is, it happened in India too. I get that in social networking sites most stuff is user generated, but there definitely needs to be some regulations. People literally were publicly lynched to death because of whatsapp forwards! Atleast ad(promoted) content should be monitored. Whatsapp officials actually had a meeting with govt representatives for the same. Probably a local database or something will be made not totally sure. It's hard, sure, but can't brush it off. It's not their fault, ofcourse, but monitoring which does not violate privacy of good users is important.

If our goal is to destroy echo chambers, instead of banning hate groups from social media(where they will definitely establish independent platforms further isolating themselves and creating a deeper feeling of "righteousness" and hate since they are being persecuted), we should aim to create social media in way where BOTH groups engage themselves much more often and encourage meaningful conversations.

The muffle against hate speech will one day reciprocate and retaliate against us. As the definition of hate speech or fake news is being used by both sides to muffle the other.

As the official said, "I've never met a Muslim before." I do understand the reason for "personalized feeds"; however, a bit of diversity on BOTH sides will obviously help ease tensions.

Banning them from the internet will simply create more hate. Yes, we sweep it under the rug, but that plant is still growing, even if we imprison them, they will become stronger. And doing such is a violation of human rights and even more importantly, this will inflame the conflict even further. Look at history.

I get to see pictures of my kids we posted years ago as babies and it makes me smile. I found out a good friend of mine died and was able to attend his funeral and pay my respects to him and his family. If you have messenger, talk to any of your friends and discuss about any topic (holiday plan, winter jacket, shoes, solar energy...) ex Facebook user (2008-2017). It was hard to see how this thing went into nutters. Once I quit it, the mental peace was too obvious for me. I don't even use FB and I'm not really a fan of any social media apart from reddit and Telegram but to me, it's actually a sorry reflection on humanity because this shows that a significant enough percentage of people abusing free speech is enough to render the whole platform a cesspool. I've come to realize that Facebook, and in extension, all social media, have enhanced the amount of toxicity that humans have.

When you earn lots of money from a particular country, as a company it is your liability to ensure that your products or services are not causing any side effect on the users. And to do so, you must hire enough employees whose sole duty would be to ensure customer safety.

I was born in Myanmar, and grew up there, and it saddens me to see the country portrayed like this, because IT'S ABSOLUTELY TRUE. There's a whole lot of hatred and paranoia in the country, and it uses religion (Buddhism) as a way to persecute people of other religions and ethnicity. If you are of any religion than Buddhism, you're the "other" and are very likely not safe. Hell, they even think of the other sect of Buddhism, Mahayana, as a demonic religion, when there's very few differences between the two sects (Myanmar practices Theravada).

This episode is completely accurate in portraying the prevalence of facebook in Myanmar. People may not have any idea how to use google, or enter a URL, but they can use facebook for pretty much everything. Facebook is basically substituted for tinder, yelp, twitter, pornhub and more in that country. And when facebook is the "internet" for the entire country, you better believe any "news" that goes viral is going to be common news for the people there. There's no fact checking, and people accept it as completely legit, and this is a very prevalent way in which hate is riled up there. It's absolutely appalling, and sadly, I don't see it changing anytime soon. The country has been put too backwards by the military dictatorship, and the education system in the country is outdated by 20~40 years depending on the subject.

Thanks to LastWeekTonight for creating this episode. Even though I have no attachments to the country, it's nice to know that more people will now be more aware of the atrocities and problems in Myanmar.

Just two years ago, I was a heavy Facebook user. I primarily used it to communicate with my friends during college, and to read the news. Now, I no longer have Facebook. Google News gets the job done; and as for my friends, I just text them.

Get rid of it, and make the world a better place. If you have a group or community page on Facebook, please consider moving them to a newsletter (and/or just start your own site). Your most serious followers will follow you over. Those who don't ... they haven't cared to visit your group/community page since they joined. Don't worry about them.

I knew Facebook is shit after a family member posted an article about a baby found dead and used a photo for the thumbnail and I was told to get over it. My cousin yelled at my mom about me and my autistic brother disrespecting her despite my brother never using words let alone Facebook and I'd dropped the platform 2 years prior, sick of seeing photos of my boyfriend then lying and cheating posted by the other woman tagging him and thus relayed to me. I barely met this cousin to say anything, she just tagged all her cousins in a rant that I guess we didn't congratulate her on something and show support. That was 2015.

But fuck people more than the platform. And I know this is mild compared.

Regardless of how much drama may result in the short-term, having a global public square where people can't help but be exposed to opposing viewpoints is a good thing in the long run. those growing up with these tools have only two options, learn to deal with crap or literally go insane.

When I went to boarding school at their summer program I created a FB account and then then next time I saw my parents I got so nervous they knew about it, I admitted I had an account in the same fashion someone might have admitted they had snuck out the night before.

I am from India and seriously think facebook needs to focus more on dealing with hate speech coz we recently had to deal with communal riots and I could see so much hate on facebook, alot of content with fake news and misinformation. I tried my best to report the content but I couldnt properly put it in the right category. And most of times the content wasnt taken down....they really need to hire alot of people from different regions of india with the knowledge of different languages so that such can be properly dealt with. Otherwise it will only facilitate chaos.

The "hate speech is language specific" quote was taken out of context - MZ was referring to artificial intelligence, and the fact that it's really hard to design automated systems that can identify hate speech without the involvement of humans. It's "language specific" in the sense that language is highly nuanced and generally can't be accurately unpacked or deciphered by a machine (as any translator will tell you).

Don't care for FB, and JO gives me a chuckle, but yes - frequently this show takes things out of context for the sake of humor. The "fail fast" bit is also out of context - that was referring to new feature releases, not rolling out to a new country. Bending and hand-waving messy reality for humor or political purposes is pretty much a human art form at this point.

Thank you for that clarification. I DO believe Zuckerberg is trying, it's just that politicians have been much to lenient towards social platforms. We already see the repercussions, such as ethnic and religious persecution, as the result of that. FB and Twitter will have to face the same laws as other publishers, which would definitely clean the air. Meaning, spreading or hosting hate speech is an criminal offense in the EU. That might get Zuckerberg actually prioritizing this as much as it needs to, because either him or some other hot shot at FB could end up in jail for the content that "others" post. They really need to act, and if need to, employ as many humans, not AI, that gets the job done. How is not an issue, just make it happen.

The moment Facebook starts to moderate it's post is the moment people start to trust what they read. Corporations should never be held responsible for the actions of it's community. Facebook should not moderate anything and then people will not expect the posts to be true. The end game is always going to be a loss if things work this way.

I am not a Facebook user. I truly believe that Facebook is a festering boil on the anus of humanity. A good lancing may be in order.

I would however like to say that the users of Facebook should also bear responsibility for the content they post and share.
The poor (and sometimes criminally hateful) decisions of users surely cannot be laid at the feet of Facebook.
I commend Facebook’s effort to moderate content. They can however do more.

Honestly, I believe Facebook is a great company, it does connect people from all around the world and has fundamentally shaped the social world we've got today. But it's not a company anymore run by a few people, it's become a global phenomenon, and that I believe is why it's difficult to perfectly audit and censor everything on it. We shouldn't just keep hating on big rich companies but instead, we should hold ourselves accountable for what we post as well as what we perceive as valid information.
