You're So Rude
Faces Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My mom she likes you, she thinks you're swell
Got the makings of a dance-hall girl
Your low-cut frock and your bird's-nest hair
Stiletto heels and the way that you swear
She says to take you back
To see my folks again
On Sunday
Why, it looks as though there's nobody in
They've all gone out to see my Auntie Renny
Don't you worry, you just come right in
I'm sure we'll pass the time 'till they come home
Well, let me take your coat
Kick off your shoes, warm your toes
Try the sofa

It's getting dark, we'll miss the late night bus
It's only eight but I'm not taking any chances
What's that noise, why'd they come back so soon?
Straighten your dress, you're really looking a mess

I'll wet my socks, pretend we just got caught in the rain
Oh, you're so rude

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Faces' song "You're So Rude" tell a story of a man bringing his date to his family's home, but as they arrive, they find that everybody has gone out to see his Auntie Renny, leaving them alone in the house. The man invites his date inside and offers to make her comfortable, taking her coat and suggesting she kicks off her shoes. However, as they relax on the sofa, they hear noises indicating the return of the family members earlier than expected. The man improvises a plan to pretend they got caught in the rain to avoid suspicion, but the singer concludes the story by accusing the woman of being rude.

The lyrics criticize the woman's behavior, implying that her attire and vulgar language are not appropriate for a family gathering, but the man's mother seems to like her anyway. However, when they are caught alone, the song suggests that the woman's behavior contributed to the awkwardness of the situation. In contrast, the man appears to be polite and hospitable to his unexpected guest, offering her a seat on the sofa and even coming up with a quick excuse to cover up the suspicious noises. The song ends with the man calling his date "rude" once again, suggesting that their evening did not go well.

Overall, "You're So Rude" is a humorous and ironic commentary on social norms and expectations, highlighting the differences in behavior between the characters involved in the story.

the outro to this song with the harmonica might be the most underrated moment in rock history

Well, aside from your hyperbole, it sure is a great outro... "most underrated"...not to me, but this is what is great about tastes and opinions...you can't contest them...

"Low cut bra and your bird's nest hair, stiletto heels and the way that you swear"
Great lyrics

DAVIb

It's actually, "Low cut frock". Like a deep V neck. A British term. But yeah, I agree, great lyrics!

Keith orlandini

Ian Mclagen is great on organ & piano in this one .There's also some nice guitar work by Ronnie Wood in the second half of this song. As if that weren't enough,Ronnie Lane came up with a set of excellent lyrics and he gives a spot on lead vocal performance too. ...but I keep going bavk to Ian's great organ work...…..Altogether, this song is a "Gas, Gas, Gas," as old Mick would say.
