Enter Sandman
Fade To Bluegrass Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Say your prayers little one
Don't forget, my son
To include everyone
Tuck you in, warm within
keep you free from sin
till the sandman he comes
sleep with one eye open
gripping your pillow tight

refrain:
Exit, light
Enter, Night
Take my hand
we're off to never-never land

Somethings wrong, shut the light
heavy thoughts tonight
And they aren't of snow white
dreams of war, dreams of liars
dreams of dragon's fire
and of things that will bite
sleep with one eye open
gripping your pillow tight

refrain

Now I lay me down to sleep (2x)
I pray the lord my soul to keep (2x)
If I die before I wake (2x)
I pray the lord my soul to take (2x)

hush little baby, don't say a word
never mind that noise you heard
it's just the beasts under your bed
in your closet, in your head

Exit, light
Enter, Night
grain of sand

refrain

boom

We're off to never never-land

Take my hand
We're off to never never-land
Take my hand
We're off to never never-land

We're off to never never-land

Overall Meaning

The song "Enter Sandman" by Metallica is often associated with nightmares and fear, as it deals with entering a dark and dangerous dream realm. In the bluegrass cover by Fade to Bluegrass, the song takes on a haunting and eerie quality, emphasized by the twangy banjo and dueling fiddle. The beginning of the song is a reverent plea to God to protect the singer's child from harm until the Sandman comes, then the tone shifts as the lyrics delve into the singer's own unsettled dreams.

The second verse takes a darker turn as the singer describes nightmares of war, fire-breathing dragons, and things that bite. The chorus features a play on words with "Exit, light / Enter, Night," cleverly connecting the concept of going to sleep to entering a new realm. The "grain of sand" at the end of the chorus most likely refers to an hourglass, symbolizing the passing of time and the inevitability of sleep.

The final verse brings a sense of security, as the singer assures their child that any strange noises are simply imaginary monsters. The song ends with a triumphant repetition of the chorus, with the band speeding up the tempo and the vocals becoming more intense.

Overall, Fade to Bluegrass's cover of "Enter Sandman" adds a haunting dimension to Metallica's classic metal hit. The bluegrass instrumentation and twangy vocals add a sense of rustic unease to the dark lyrics, making this version of the song perfect for a spooky Halloween party or a late-night campfire gathering.

I have enjoyed listening to this version so much for a long time.

Driving to work each morning it was my go to track and I sang along like no one was watching.

I feel kind of guilty for the value I have had from this performance and I haven't paid a bean for it.

Thank you Iron Horse.

The lyrics of this song so perfectly fit the bluegrass genre. lots of religious imagery, and dark subjects. I  would suspect some old bluegrassers around here would love the song ,never having heard the original.

I have never in my life been so impressed by the variety of covers Iron Horse has chosen to play. Thank you, so much and look forward to ‘new’ stuff! Your rendition of ‘Rocket Man’ had me in tears, as it was such a tribute to Sir Elton John! Five days in a row I said ‘yes, yes’ I heard it...but, when I did...I was....I can’t get enough people to listen to it! Please, don’t stop what you’re doing!
