The youngest of the five children of José Fares, Lebanese immigrant to Brazil, and Dona Francisca, Fagner was born in Fortaleza, the capital of the state of Ceará, although his birth was recorded in Orós.
At the age of five years he won a youth competition at a local radio station. As a teen, he formed vocal and instrumental groups and began to compose his own music. In 1968 he won the Festival de Música Popular do Ceará (Popular Music Festival of Ceará) with his song "Nada Sou" (I am Nothing).
In 1971 he moved to the capital Brasília, taking first place in the Festival de Música Popular do Centro de Estudos Universitários de Brasília (Popular Music Festival of the University Studies Center of Brasília) with his piece "Mucuripe" (with collaborator Belchior), which was later recorded by artist Elis Regina, and became Fagner's first notable success as a composer. He won prizes in other categories with additional pieces, as well.
He has had a distinguished career as a performer, singer, songwriter and composer for over 3 decades, and is also known for his collaborations with other MPB artists such as Caetano Veloso, Roberta Miranda, Chico Buarque and others.
Chorei Por Você

Em frente ao seu portão
Não esqueça de lembrar
Nosso amor não é uma prisão
As flores do jardim sobrevivem no inverno
The lyrics to Fagner's song "Chorei Por Você" speak of the pain and longing for a lost love. The opening lines, "If a bird sings in front of your door, don't forget to remember that our love is not a prison," imply that the singer wants their former partner to know that they are not trying to hold them back or keep them from moving on. Instead, they acknowledge that love should be free and not constrictive. The next lines, "The flowers in the garden survive in winter, and the eternal god of love does not want to separate us," suggest that despite the struggles and difficulties that may come with maintaining a relationship, the love between the two is strong enough to survive.
The singer then addresses their former partner directly, expressing their desire for their return and their weariness of waiting for them. They also express hope for the future and the many plans and desires they have together. However, they are confronted with the reality that time is passing and the opportunity for their love to flourish may be slipping away. The emotional climax of the song comes in the lines, "Our boat falls asleep, and our eyes cry in front of the gate, remembering that there was a wounded bird in our hearts." This image of a wounded bird, a symbol of the love that once thrived between the two, highlights the pain and heartbreak of their separation. The final lines, "Thinking about life, in the middle of the street, I cried for you," encapsulate the singer's sadness and longing for their lost love.
