The youngest of the five children of José Fares, Lebanese immigrant to Brazil, and Dona Francisca, Fagner was born in Fortaleza, the capital of the state of Ceará, although his birth was recorded in Orós.
At the age of five years he won a youth competition at a local radio station. As a teen, he formed vocal and instrumental groups and began to compose his own music. In 1968 he won the Festival de Música Popular do Ceará (Popular Music Festival of Ceará) with his song "Nada Sou" (I am Nothing).
In 1971 he moved to the capital Brasília, taking first place in the Festival de Música Popular do Centro de Estudos Universitários de Brasília (Popular Music Festival of the University Studies Center of Brasília) with his piece "Mucuripe" (with collaborator Belchior), which was later recorded by artist Elis Regina, and became Fagner's first notable success as a composer. He won prizes in other categories with additional pieces, as well.
He has had a distinguished career as a performer, singer, songwriter and composer for over 3 decades, and is also known for his collaborations with other MPB artists such as Caetano Veloso, Roberta Miranda, Chico Buarque and others.

A minha estrela guia não apagou
Consultei a minha bola de cristal
Você estava no mais lindo arsenal
Vi você, meu amor
Vi você, meu amor
Vi você, meu amor
No véu da noite
As nuvens brancas do dia
No tesão por seu amor
Eu juro que eu uivaria
Cão feito um lobo
Na lua cheia
Oi, oi, oi, oi
Foi tanta simpatia
Pra ganhar seu coração
Rezei até novena
Pra São Pedro e São João
Meu sétimo sentido
Falava e me dizia
Você está contente
Enquanto meu peito explodia
Oi, oi, oi, oi, oi, oi.
The song "Estrela Guia" by Fagner talks about the singer's deep love and attraction towards someone, who is his guiding star and has a significant influence on his life. The lyrics signify the powerful and lasting effect of this person on the singer, even during the darkest moments of the night when nothing else is visible. The singer's star is always shining, always visible, and always guiding him towards his love. The use of the crystal ball is symbolic of the singer's faith and hope in his love, and how he sees his love as something pure and beautiful. The repeated line, "Vi você, meu amor," means "I saw you, my love," indicating the singer's intense feeling of seeing his love everywhere.
The song's lyrics also express the singer's strong desire for his beloved, represented by the metaphor of the clouds in the daytime and the full moon at night. The singer confesses that his love is so strong that he would howl like a wolf in the full moon. He goes on to say that he did everything in his power to win his love's heart, even praying to saints and using his intuition to know when his love was happy or not. The final line, "enquanto meu peito explodia" means "while my heart exploded," indicating the overwhelming love and passion that he experiences for his beloved.

Não sou chegado no Fágner, mas essa eu ainda acho a melhor música dele.
