The youngest of the five children of José Fares, Lebanese immigrant to Brazil, and Dona Francisca, Fagner was born in Fortaleza, the capital of the state of Ceará, although his birth was recorded in Orós.
At the age of five years he won a youth competition at a local radio station. As a teen, he formed vocal and instrumental groups and began to compose his own music. In 1968 he won the Festival de Música Popular do Ceará (Popular Music Festival of Ceará) with his song "Nada Sou" (I am Nothing).
In 1971 he moved to the capital Brasília, taking first place in the Festival de Música Popular do Centro de Estudos Universitários de Brasília (Popular Music Festival of the University Studies Center of Brasília) with his piece "Mucuripe" (with collaborator Belchior), which was later recorded by artist Elis Regina, and became Fagner's first notable success as a composer. He won prizes in other categories with additional pieces, as well.
He has had a distinguished career as a performer, singer, songwriter and composer for over 3 decades, and is also known for his collaborations with other MPB artists such as Caetano Veloso, Roberta Miranda, Chico Buarque and others.
Falsa Folia
Fagner Lyrics

Nem meu coração
Não se perca na falsa folia
Nem na tentação.
Nossa vida tem caminhos
Tão bonitos, meu amor
Tantos sonhos, tantos planos
Seja igual à terra perfeita
Boa de plantar
Pra que minha semente no cio
Possa germinar.
Só assim essa luz ilumina
E o sorriso possa ser do céu
E o amor que perdeu seu começo
Encontre o seu mel.
The lyrics to Fagner's song Falsa Folia convey a message about safeguarding the purity of love and avoiding the distractions that can lead to its destruction. The singer implores the listener not to hurt this pure love, nor his heart. The reference to "falsa folia" or false revelry suggests that the singer is cautioning against the allure of fleeting pleasure, which can obscure the importance of the love that he is trying to protect. The mention of their shared journey together is an appeal to remember the beauty of the life they have built together, with its myriad dreams, plans, and heartfelt warmth.
The chorus continues with a metaphor about the ideal soil for planting seeds, with the singer wishing that his partner could be like that perfect ground where his "seed in heat" can germinate. This creates a clear analogy between the natural growth of a plant and the growth of their relationship. He believes that only then will their love truly flourish, illuminating their world and bringing the smile back on their faces. The reference to love's lost beginning finding its "mel" (honey) suggests that the goal of their journey is to rediscover the sweet and fulfilling aspects of their love that they may have lost sight of.
