The youngest of the five children of José Fares, Lebanese immigrant to Brazil, and Dona Francisca, Fagner was born in Fortaleza, the capital of the state of Ceará, although his birth was recorded in Orós.
At the age of five years he won a youth competition at a local radio station. As a teen, he formed vocal and instrumental groups and began to compose his own music. In 1968 he won the Festival de Música Popular do Ceará (Popular Music Festival of Ceará) with his song "Nada Sou" (I am Nothing).
In 1971 he moved to the capital Brasília, taking first place in the Festival de Música Popular do Centro de Estudos Universitários de Brasília (Popular Music Festival of the University Studies Center of Brasília) with his piece "Mucuripe" (with collaborator Belchior), which was later recorded by artist Elis Regina, and became Fagner's first notable success as a composer. He won prizes in other categories with additional pieces, as well.
He has had a distinguished career as a performer, singer, songwriter and composer for over 3 decades, and is also known for his collaborations with other MPB artists such as Caetano Veloso, Roberta Miranda, Chico Buarque and others.

Quem vai no verão
O cheiro da flor
Produz algodão
Fruto na mão
Chuchu, agrião
Pepino, tomate
Araça azul, manera Frufru
Que a dor do sertão
Reluz na cor do meu azulão
The lyrics to Fagner's song Flor Do Algodão paint a beautiful picture of the summer season in the countryside of Brazil. The song talks about a market in the sun where one can find the scent of cotton producing flowers. The imagery is vivid and conveys a sense of warmth and serenity that one associates with the summer season. The song also makes a reference to the abundance of fruits and vegetables found in the region. The singer mentions chuchu, agrião, pepino, and tomate, adding a touch of realism to the song. The reference to the fruits and vegetables creates an ambiance that is both earthy and wholesome.
The second stanza of the song is equally evocative, with the singer referring to a particular fruit, the Araça azul, and a bird, the azulão. The bird's color reflects the pain and suffering of the region. The song offers a glimpse into the life of farmers and their struggles in the harsh climate of the Brazilian Northeast. The lyrics are poignant, and the melody is soulful, conveying a sense of melancholy that is both beautiful and reflective.
