The youngest of the five children of José Fares, Lebanese immigrant to Brazil, and Dona Francisca, Fagner was born in Fortaleza, the capital of the state of Ceará, although his birth was recorded in Orós.
At the age of five years he won a youth competition at a local radio station. As a teen, he formed vocal and instrumental groups and began to compose his own music. In 1968 he won the Festival de Música Popular do Ceará (Popular Music Festival of Ceará) with his song "Nada Sou" (I am Nothing).
In 1971 he moved to the capital Brasília, taking first place in the Festival de Música Popular do Centro de Estudos Universitários de Brasília (Popular Music Festival of the University Studies Center of Brasília) with his piece "Mucuripe" (with collaborator Belchior), which was later recorded by artist Elis Regina, and became Fagner's first notable success as a composer. He won prizes in other categories with additional pieces, as well.
He has had a distinguished career as a performer, singer, songwriter and composer for over 3 decades, and is also known for his collaborations with other MPB artists such as Caetano Veloso, Roberta Miranda, Chico Buarque and others.

The lyrics to Fagner's song Fracassos are about a difficult and painful breakup. The singer is telling their ex-partner not to cry when they say they are leaving because it was their (the ex-partner's) choice to end the relationship and they will have to suffer the consequences. They ask their ex-partner not to make them lose their reason and not to hurt their heart anymore. The singer then laments that suffering for love is like dying to them, as they are a dreamer and the ex-partner should have known that.
The singer tells their ex-partner that they should remember they were loved and that they have to cry if the singer suffers or pay if the singer dies. The song's final verses talk about the nights and days that were spent dreaming and thinking about the relationship, and the singer asks the ex-partner to keep their sadness to themselves and only say that they left sad and never to come back. The lyrics are emotional and express the sadness, anger, and pain that can come after a breakup.

Tenho 50 anos, mas conheço essa música desde os 10 anos. Meu irmão sempre cantava. Na realidade a versão que eu gosto é na voz dele (meu irmão) que está gravada na minha memória. Depois, eu conheci a versão original com Fagner, depois com Gilliard, Fagner e Cauby Peixoto e por fim, Fagner e Fafá de Belém.
