The youngest of the five children of José Fares, Lebanese immigrant to Brazil, and Dona Francisca, Fagner was born in Fortaleza, the capital of the state of Ceará, although his birth was recorded in Orós.
At the age of five years he won a youth competition at a local radio station. As a teen, he formed vocal and instrumental groups and began to compose his own music. In 1968 he won the Festival de Música Popular do Ceará (Popular Music Festival of Ceará) with his song "Nada Sou" (I am Nothing).
In 1971 he moved to the capital Brasília, taking first place in the Festival de Música Popular do Centro de Estudos Universitários de Brasília (Popular Music Festival of the University Studies Center of Brasília) with his piece "Mucuripe" (with collaborator Belchior), which was later recorded by artist Elis Regina, and became Fagner's first notable success as a composer. He won prizes in other categories with additional pieces, as well.
He has had a distinguished career as a performer, singer, songwriter and composer for over 3 decades, and is also known for his collaborations with other MPB artists such as Caetano Veloso, Roberta Miranda, Chico Buarque and others.

O teu olhar bateu no meu
Como o sol amanheceu
Sobre as plantas no quintal
E foi queimando
Esquentando tudo dentro
A partir deste momento
O teu olhar
Teu olhar brilhou no meu
O meu olhar
Meu olhar brilhou no teu
É no olhar
Que o poeta amola o verso
Com que fere o universo
Até sangrar a beleza
E com certeza
Com os olhos que se chora
Que se pede, que se implora
Que se demonstra a tristeza
É no olhar
Que agasalha o amor
Lá também nasce o rancor
Enviado da paixão
Olhe pra mim
Pro povo trabalhador
Olhe pra tudo ao redor
E tire os olhos do chão
O teu olhar
O meu olhar
Tiro Certeiro is a Portuguese song by Fagner with deeply romantic lyrics that convey the power of strong emotions communicated through the eyes. The song starts with the singer describing how his lover's gaze hit him with such intensity that it felt like the sun rising over plants in a garden, igniting a fire within him. The passion in his lover's eyes shone brightly in his own, and he realizes that the poet sharpens his verses with the emotions that eyes can express. The verses also talk about how eyes can demonstrate vulnerability, the pain of heartbreak, and even anger.
At the same time, eyes can also be a source of comfort and love, encouraging people to look around and notice the beauty in the world, as well as the struggles of the working class. The powerful sentiment in the lyrics is further heightened by Fagner's soulful voice, which conveys every nuance of emotion described in the song. The song beautifully captures the complexity of human emotion and the power of the eyes to reflect it all.
