The youngest of the five children of José Fares, Lebanese immigrant to Brazil, and Dona Francisca, Fagner was born in Fortaleza, the capital of the state of Ceará, although his birth was recorded in Orós.
At the age of five years he won a youth competition at a local radio station. As a teen, he formed vocal and instrumental groups and began to compose his own music. In 1968 he won the Festival de Música Popular do Ceará (Popular Music Festival of Ceará) with his song "Nada Sou" (I am Nothing).
In 1971 he moved to the capital Brasília, taking first place in the Festival de Música Popular do Centro de Estudos Universitários de Brasília (Popular Music Festival of the University Studies Center of Brasília) with his piece "Mucuripe" (with collaborator Belchior), which was later recorded by artist Elis Regina, and became Fagner's first notable success as a composer. He won prizes in other categories with additional pieces, as well.
He has had a distinguished career as a performer, singer, songwriter and composer for over 3 decades, and is also known for his collaborations with other MPB artists such as Caetano Veloso, Roberta Miranda, Chico Buarque and others.

In the lyrics of "Distância", Fagner sings about his longing for his lover and his determination to shorten the distance between them. He starts off by saying that he will shorten the journey that's been keeping him away from her. He compares himself to a bird, flying towards his lover with the same joy and melody that a bird sings. He carries with him a great sense of longing since no one feels the same longing he does. However, he leaves with her at least half of his longing, just to make her understand what he feels for her. He pledges to place a ruby on her empty chest, but from this far away, all he can do is dream about embracing her and hold her close to him like an animal in heat.
The second half of the song speaks about Fagner's hopefulness and anticipation of their reunion. He says that the distance has been tormenting him for some time, but he continues to hope for the reunion. His thoughts and emotions are centered on his beloved. Finally, when they meet again, he vows to embrace her with the same joy and delight that a child feels while playing, and he will kiss her passionately like a hummingbird sucking nectar from a flower. Fagner acknowledges that at the moment, he can only dream about embracing her like that and putting the ruby on her chest.
