Anymore
Fair Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's almost like we're here again
Right back where we started with
A shoddy alibi

If you could see this honestly
Cautious, moving quietly
A passionate reply
I don't believe you anymore
Well if it's true, I'll buy
But why can't you do right?

Another night without a sound
Another plea is kicked round
A cyclical disease

A river born with lofty dreams
To finish strong to meet the sea
Became a dying stream

I don't believe you anymore
Well if it's true, I'll buy
But why can't you do right?

I've got something to say it's serious

Let go this time
Fall down, it's alright

Overall Meaning

The song "Anymore" by Fair is about losing trust in someone and feeling like they continually disappoint you. The first two lines set the tone for the rest of the song, as the lyrics describe how it feels like they are back at the beginning with the same weak excuses. The next line, "If you could see this honestly," suggests that the other person is hiding something and isn't being truthful, so the singer is moving cautiously and watching their every move. Despite this, they still have a passionate response to the lies they are being fed.

The second verse describes how this situation is cyclical and unchanging. Every night there is silence, and every plea is ignored or brushed aside. The river metaphor suggests that something that started with big dreams has slowly dwindled down to nothing as time has passed, much like the trust in this relationship. The chorus repeats the singer's disbelief in the other person's words, suggesting that even if they were telling the truth, it's too little too late. The last line, "But why can't you do right?" is almost a desperate plea for the other person to prove the singer wrong and be honest.

The bridge is a direct address to the other person, with the singer saying that they have something serious to say, meaning they have reached a breaking point. The lines "let go this time/ fall down, it's alright" suggest that the singer is okay with the other person making a mistake and failing to gain their trust back, but it's time to move on.
