Fairuz was born Nouhad Haddad in Jabal al Arz, Lebanon. She began her musical career as a teenager. From chorus girl at the Lebanese radio station in the late 1940s, to critical and popular acclaim from the 1950s to today, Fairuz is acknowledged not only for her musical talent and contribution, but also as a cultural and political icon. A symbol of a people, a heritage, a quest for peace, and of humanity. During most of her career, Fairuz reflected two other great artists, Assi and Mansour Rahbani. They wrote the lyrics and composed her tunes. Today, many of her songs reflect the composing talent of Ziad Rahbani who is Fairuz's son. Her songs testify to the Rahbani musical genius, as well as to Fairuz's broad musical background. Referred to as "The Soul of Lebanon" in the 1970s, Fairuz became a pre-eminent figure, a superstar of current music in the Arab world. Together, the Rahbani family is both a school of music and a cultural phenomenon.
Aatini Nay
Fairuz Lyrics

In Fairuz's Aatini Nay, the singer implores someone to give them a flute so that they can sing because singing is the secret to existence. The second part of the song is a series of questions that ask the listener if they have ever left the luxurious houses of society to live in the forest, to follow streams, climb rocks, and take in the scents and lights. The singer then asks if the listener has ever drunk from the cups of ether at dawn or sat amongst the grape leaves in the afternoon, with the grapes hanging in colours like ornaments of gold. The singer also asks if the listener has laid on the grass at night and wrapped themselves in open spaces, uninterested in what's to come, forgetting what's past. The chorus repeats through the song, where the singer asks for the flute to sing and forget about all of life's troubles.
Essentially, the song is a call to return to nature, to escape from the pressures of society and the preoccupations of everything and go back to enjoying life. It seems to be a testament to how music can help us connect with nature and forget all of our cares, it becomes our sorrows' balm. The song encourages an appreciation for the beauty of the world that we can find by immersing ourselves in the natural environment.

Give me the flute and sing
for singing is the secret of existence
And the sound of the flute remains
After the end of existence.
Have you, as i did, taken the jungle
A house without limitations
Have you followed the Runnels
And climbed the rocks
have you bathed in its fragrance
and dried yourself in its light
Have you tried drinking the Dawn as your wine
out of divine cups
Have you, as i did, sat in the afternoon
Between the grapes plants
with the clusters hanging
like golden chandlers...
Have you, as i did, slept on the grass at night
And used the sky as you blanket
Ascetic in what will come
Forgetting what has passed
Give me the flute and sing
Forget the disease and medication
For people are only lines
written with water

It's so unfortunate that no translation can ever give justice to these lyrics... At least Fairouz's voice allowed everyone to feel the lyrics without a full understanding of them 💜
