Fairuz was born Nouhad Haddad in Jabal al Arz, Lebanon. She began her musical career as a teenager. From chorus girl at the Lebanese radio station in the late 1940s, to critical and popular acclaim from the 1950s to today, Fairuz is acknowledged not only for her musical talent and contribution, but also as a cultural and political icon. A symbol of a people, a heritage, a quest for peace, and of humanity. During most of her career, Fairuz reflected two other great artists, Assi and Mansour Rahbani. They wrote the lyrics and composed her tunes. Today, many of her songs reflect the composing talent of Ziad Rahbani who is Fairuz's son. Her songs testify to the Rahbani musical genius, as well as to Fairuz's broad musical background. Referred to as "The Soul of Lebanon" in the 1970s, Fairuz became a pre-eminent figure, a superstar of current music in the Arab world. Together, the Rahbani family is both a school of music and a cultural phenomenon.

Fairuz's song "Dak Khilkeh" talks about feeling suffocated and frustrated by a certain situation or person. The lyrics imply a feeling of being trapped and unable to express oneself freely, as the singer addresses a male character who does not seem to understand them, even when they look or speak. The character's actions also seem to hinder the singer's ability to take action as he constantly disagrees with them and makes them feel claustrophobic. The singer's frustration is further exhibited by their question "what good is suspicion?", possibly suggesting that being mistrustful does not solve their problems or bring them any benefit. The singer's experience reaches a peak as they recall a recent frustrating encounter where they failed and the only thing they received was unwanted interference.

My soul is feeling suffocated, oh young man
Due to this tense atmosphere
Oh young man, who does not understand anything from a look or even from words
Preventing me from doing or saying anything
You talk and then you become deaf to what is being said to you
And if I answer you once, you explode
Your love surrounds me, and everything around me also takes your side
Oh young man, doubt does not benefit you, what good could it bring?
Who told you that it is easy to always lie?
And you promise that you will change, but appearances and hope do not really change
Yesterday, on the way, my belongings fell apart and my box opened!
No, not everything is because of me
