Fairuz was born Nouhad Haddad in Jabal al Arz, Lebanon. She began her musical career as a teenager. From chorus girl at the Lebanese radio station in the late 1940s, to critical and popular acclaim from the 1950s to today, Fairuz is acknowledged not only for her musical talent and contribution, but also as a cultural and political icon. A symbol of a people, a heritage, a quest for peace, and of humanity. During most of her career, Fairuz reflected two other great artists, Assi and Mansour Rahbani. They wrote the lyrics and composed her tunes. Today, many of her songs reflect the composing talent of Ziad Rahbani who is Fairuz's son. Her songs testify to the Rahbani musical genius, as well as to Fairuz's broad musical background. Referred to as "The Soul of Lebanon" in the 1970s, Fairuz became a pre-eminent figure, a superstar of current music in the Arab world. Together, the Rahbani family is both a school of music and a cultural phenomenon.

The song "Gulnar" by Fairuz is a beautiful piece that depicts longing and hope amidst a dark and lonely night. The lyrics speak of the singer's heart being filled with fire after a long night, and hoping that their sister, Gulnar, will come and sing to them. The sound of cries in the valley echoes through the fog, and as they call out to their lover, he remains hidden. The singer cries, like a shepherd with his flock, and asks those around them what they think, before finally urging them to listen to the silence and the calm of the night. The singer is left waiting on the path, with their heart a watchtower, hoping for a thousand days to pass until they are reunited with their lover.
The lyrics of "Gulnar" are rich with metaphor and emotion, as Fairuz sings of the singer's love, longing, and hope. The shepherd's cries mirror their own, and the fog that shrouds the valley seems to reflect their own uncertainties and anxieties. The repeated references to waiting and hoping, and the repeated call for silence, suggest a kind of spiritual state, as the singer seeks to find peace and reassurance in their connection to nature and to their own emotions. The poem, then, is not just a love song, but a meditation on human emotion and the power of nature to shape our perception of reality.
