Fairuz was born Nouhad Haddad in Jabal al Arz, Lebanon. She began her musical career as a teenager. From chorus girl at the Lebanese radio station in the late 1940s, to critical and popular acclaim from the 1950s to today, Fairuz is acknowledged not only for her musical talent and contribution, but also as a cultural and political icon. A symbol of a people, a heritage, a quest for peace, and of humanity. During most of her career, Fairuz reflected two other great artists, Assi and Mansour Rahbani. They wrote the lyrics and composed her tunes. Today, many of her songs reflect the composing talent of Ziad Rahbani who is Fairuz's son. Her songs testify to the Rahbani musical genius, as well as to Fairuz's broad musical background. Referred to as "The Soul of Lebanon" in the 1970s, Fairuz became a pre-eminent figure, a superstar of current music in the Arab world. Together, the Rahbani family is both a school of music and a cultural phenomenon.

The lyrics to Fairuz's song "Halalaya" evoke a sense of longing and desire for a loved one. The repetition of "Halalaya" creates a hypnotic rhythm that draws in the listener, and the repeated phrase "عيني يا موليا" (My eyes, O my master) implies a sense of submission and devotion. The singer asks that her heart's desire be fulfilled - that the sweetness of love be tasted - and implores her lover to come to her.
The song speaks of a journey to find love, as the singer beckons the listener to join her in a tent in the heart of the wilderness. She longs to visit the lands of the olive trees, to find her love and ask after him. The imagery of nature throughout the song is enchanting - the light breeze carrying the scent of flowers, and the gentle water of a flowing river contrast with the arid wilderness in which the tent stands.
Overall, "Halalaya" conveys a sense of longing and yearning for a lover who is far away, and evokes a feeling of romanticism and adventure. It is a beautiful song that captures the essence of love and the journey to find it.
