Fairuz was born Nouhad Haddad in Jabal al Arz, Lebanon. She began her musical career as a teenager. From chorus girl at the Lebanese radio station in the late 1940s, to critical and popular acclaim from the 1950s to today, Fairuz is acknowledged not only for her musical talent and contribution, but also as a cultural and political icon. A symbol of a people, a heritage, a quest for peace, and of humanity. During most of her career, Fairuz reflected two other great artists, Assi and Mansour Rahbani. They wrote the lyrics and composed her tunes. Today, many of her songs reflect the composing talent of Ziad Rahbani who is Fairuz's son. Her songs testify to the Rahbani musical genius, as well as to Fairuz's broad musical background. Referred to as "The Soul of Lebanon" in the 1970s, Fairuz became a pre-eminent figure, a superstar of current music in the Arab world. Together, the Rahbani family is both a school of music and a cultural phenomenon.

The song "Ya Jabal Ali B'id" by Fairuz is a beautiful expression of a longing for loved ones who are far away. The lyrics describe a distant mountain behind which the singer's loved ones are located, and their absence is causing the singer great sadness. The repetition of the line "Ya Jabal Ali B'id" highlights the singer's desperation for the mountain to convey a message to their loved ones and bring them back closer to the singer. The second stanza reveals that the singer has asked the people of the town about the whereabouts of their loved ones and learned that they have left and abandoned everything behind. The third stanza features the voices of birds who are also searching for their companions, reflecting the universal nature of the singer's longing.
The song captures the universal human experience of longing and separation. The singer expresses deep feelings of sadness and loneliness, and seeks the comfort of their loved ones. The metaphor of the mountain, the use of repetition, and the variations in the tone of the singer throughout the song all contribute to a complex meditation on the themes of love and separation.
