Joy to the World
Faith Hill Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Joy to the world, the Lord is come
Let Earth receive her King
Let every heart prepare Him room
And heaven and nature sing
And heaven and nature sing
And heaven, and heaven, and nature sing

Joy to the world, the Savior reigns
Let all their songs employ
While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy

He rules the world with truth and grace
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness
And wonders of His love
And wonders of His love
And wonders, wonders, of His love

Joy to the world, the Lord is come
Let Earth receive her King
Let every heart prepare Him room
And heaven and nature sing

And heaven and nature sing
And heaven, and heaven, and nature sing

Overall Meaning

The opening line, โ€œJoy to the world, the Lord is comeโ€, draws from the traditional Christmas carol that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. Here, Faith Hill uses it to express the joy that comes with the arrival of a king. She urges Earth to receive its king and prepare room for him in every heart. She also wants heaven and nature to sing along, suggesting the universality of the joy being celebrated. Hill goes on to proclaim that the Savior reigns, and encourages everyone to employ all their songs in praising him. The next line switches to the natural world, as rocks, hills, plains and floods all join in repeating what the singer calls the โ€œsounding joyโ€. These elements are seen as witnesses to the great news that has come.

The third verse is a declaration of victory and justice. The king rules the world with truth and grace, pushing every nation to prove the surpassing quality of his righteousness. Hill concludes by calling the wonders of his love, using the refrain to further emphasize the enduring nature of the joy expressed in the song. Overall, the message of this song is that the arrival of the king should be celebrated with universal joy, that he should be accepted into every heart, and that his rule is characterized by righteousness, grace, and love.
