Brass In Pocket
Faith Hill & The Pretenders Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Got brass in pocket
Got bottle, I'm gonna use it
Intention, I feel inventive
Gonna make you, make you, make you notice

Got motion, restrained emotion
Been driving, Detroit leaning
No reason, just seems so pleasing
Gonna make you, make you, make you notice

Gonna use my arms
Gonna use my legs
Gonna use my style
Gonna use my sidestep
Gonna use my fingers
Gonna use my, my, my imagination

'Cause I gonna make you see
There's nobody else here
No one like me
I'm special (special), so special (special)
I gotta have some of your attention, give it to me

Got rhythm, I can't miss a beat
Got new skank, it's so reet
Got something, I'm winking at you
Gonna make you, make you, make you notice

Gonna use my arms
Gonna use my legs
Gonna use my style
Gonna use my sidestep
Gonna use my fingers
Gonna use my, my, my imagination, oh

'Cause I gonna make you see
There's nobody else here
No one like me
I'm special (special), so special (special)
I gotta have some of your attention
Give it to me
'Cause I gonna make you see
There's nobody else here
No one like me
I'm special (special), so special (special)
I gotta have some of your attention

Give it to me

Oh
And when you walk

Overall Meaning

into the room, I see you
I know it's going to happen soon
I look across the room and noticed you noticing me
And I know just what you're thinking
You're thinking, "I want her for myself"
And I'm ready to make that happen

In the song, "Brass in Pocket," Faith Hill and The Pretenders sing about a woman who is confident and determined to get the attention of the person she desires. She has "brass in pocket" meaning that she has the money or the confidence to pursue her interest. "Got motion, restrained emotion" suggests she is cool and calm under pressure. "Been driving, Detroit leaning, no reason, just seems so pleasing" implies that she is driving around with no real purpose but enjoying the ride. The woman is using all her abilities to get noticed by the object of her desire, whether that be her style, her imaginative mind, or her ability to dance. Overall, the lyrics suggest that the woman is special, and she knows it, so she wants the person she likes to know it too.

It's a shame Pete went off the rails, you can see here he was just thrilled to be appearing on TOTP but looking at the Message of Love performance a couple of years later success had gone to his head and he was gripped by heroin addiction.

@MsAppassionata

I wish they had performed this live instead of lip-syncing.

@MLAM168

Blame the producers of TOTP then.

@nonnayoubuzinnes1669

Top of the Pops wouldn't allow it unfortunately
