When asked about the song, Billy Gould replied: "The bulk of that song was written the first week. We arranged it here, and then we sent Patton a tape. He was in Italy, but he came up with the lyrics and the singing right away. It was one of those songs that just clicked -- one of those songs that we do most naturally. That's our sound."

It's on my head
I'll point the finger at me
It's on my head
Give it all to you, then I'll be closer
Smiling with the mouth of the ocean
And I'll wave to you with the arms of the mountain
I will let you shout no more
It's on my head (It's on my head)
I'll pick you up from the floor
It's on my head (It's on my head)
I'll let you even the score
It's on my head (It's on my head)
Give it all to you, then I'll be closer
Smiling with the mouth of the ocean
And I'll wave to you with the arms of the mountain
I'll see you
Give the same to me, then I'll be closer, closer
Give the same to me, then I'll be closer, closer
Smiling with the mouth of the ocean
And I'll wave to you with the arms of the mountain
Give the same to me, then I'll be closer, closer
Give the same to me, then I'll be closer, closer
The lyrics to Faith No More's song "Ashes to Ashes" describe a deep sense of guilt and a desire for redemption. The singer acknowledges that the blame for whatever has gone wrong in their life or in their relationships with others is entirely their own, and they offer to take responsibility for fixing things. They want to give all they can to those around them in order to make amends and be closer to them, symbolized by the image of "smiling with the mouth of the ocean" and "waving to you with the arms of the mountain." However, the singer also recognizes that this effort is not one-sided and that they also need to receive forgiveness and understanding in order to move forward.
Overall, "Ashes to Ashes" is a powerful exploration of personal responsibility and the desire for reconciliation. The singer acknowledges their own role in whatever difficulties they are facing and offers to make amends, while also acknowledging that forgiveness and understanding from others will be necessary for true healing to occur.

Here's my Mike Patton story
He was in town supporting the Tomahawk project, they were on tour with The Melvins
Anyhow, with a ball cap and sunglasses on, he resembles about 4 billion people
But i heard him say something, just some random throw away phrase, but i recognized his voice
I looked over and we caught each others glance
I nodded and simply said "Mr. Patton" and he nodded in response
Later that evening, the venue was so packed, i found myself standing in the sound booth too watch the show
When it finished I chatted it up with the sound tech guy and lo and behold Mike Patton walked into the booth
He glanced my direction, dismissedly, but then realized i was the guy from earlier
He semi smiled and said "Hey The Quiet guy from the store"
That was it, thats my Mike Patton story
My brother has a better one, but he'll have too tell it
