After releasing six studio albums, including best-selling records The Real Thing (1989) and Angel Dust (1992), Faith No More officially announced its breakup on April 20, 1998. The band has since reunited, conducting The Second Coming Tour between 2009 and 2010, and releasing its seventh studio album, Sol Invictus, in May 2015. After the touring cycle of Sol Invictus, Faith No More went on hiatus once again. In November 2019, the band announced that it would reunite to embark on a 2020 UK and European tour, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this was postponed. Touring was due to recommence with a brief US tour in September 2021, followed by the previously postponed UK and Europe dates in June 2022, but all tour dates were cancelled with Patton citing mental health reasons.

Last Cup of Sorrow
Faith No More Lyrics

And so are you
Everything you know
And never knew
Will run through your fingers
Just like sand
Enjoy it while you can
Like a snake between two stones
It itches in your bones
Take a deep breath and swallow
Your sorrow
Tomorrow
So raise it up and lets propose a toast
To the thing that hurts you most
It's your last cup of sorrow
What can you say?
Finish it today
It's your last cup of sorrow
So think of me
And get on your way
It won't begin
Until you make it end
Until you know the how the where and the when
With a new face you might surprise yourself
Like a snake between two stones
It itches in your bones
Take a deep breath and swallow
Your sorrow
Tomorrow
So raise it up and lets propose a toast
To the thing that hurts you most
It's your last cup of sorrow
What can you say?
Finish it today
It's your last cup of sorrow
So think of me
And get on your way!
You might surprise yourself
You might surprise yourself
You might surprise yourself
You might surprise yourself
You might surprise yourself
You might surprise yourself
You might surprise yourself
You might surprise yourself
You might surprise yourself
You might surprise yourself
You might surprise yourself
The lyrics of the Faith No More song, Last Cup of Sorrow, speak of a sense of weariness and disillusionment. The singer addresses someone who they feel is aging and becoming irrelevant, and warns them that time is slipping away rapidly. The image of sand running through the fingers is a powerful metaphor for the fleeting nature of existence. The song then takes on a more philosophical tone, as the singer urges the listener to embrace uncertainty and take risks, to face the unknown with courage and to finish what they have to do without any regrets. The chorus of the song stresses the idea that everyone experiences a last cup of sorrow, and that this is a universal truth. In a sense, the song is a call to embrace mortality and to live life fully, without holding back or being weighed down by regrets.
The verses of the song are delivered in a brooding way, with ominous bass lines and spooky electronic sounds emphasizing the sense of unease and uncertainty that permeates the lyrics. The chorus, however, is more upbeat and driven, with insistent drumming and an anthemic quality to the vocals. The repeated refrain of "you might surprise yourself" is a message of hope and encouragement, suggesting that even in the face of adversity or mortality, we still have the power to rise above ourselves and achieve greatness.
Overall, the song is both a meditation on the fleeting nature of life and a rallying cry to live life to the fullest, to seize the day and to embrace the unknown without hesitation. It is a powerful statement about human mortality and the human condition, delivered with the kind of raw intensity and musicality that has made Faith No More such a seminal band in the history of alternative rock.

FNM was great before Mike Patton joined... but holy shit, he was like the catalyst that just made them so fantastic and exciting to listen to. Pretty much anything he's involved in is pure gold and should be cherished for the remaining existence of human kind.
