After releasing six studio albums, including best-selling records The Real Thing (1989) and Angel Dust (1992), Faith No More officially announced its breakup on April 20, 1998. The band has since reunited, conducting The Second Coming Tour between 2009 and 2010, and releasing its seventh studio album, Sol Invictus, in May 2015. After the touring cycle of Sol Invictus, Faith No More went on hiatus once again. In November 2019, the band announced that it would reunite to embark on a 2020 UK and European tour, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this was postponed. Touring was due to recommence with a brief US tour in September 2021, followed by the previously postponed UK and Europe dates in June 2022, but all tour dates were cancelled with Patton citing mental health reasons.

A justifiable means to an end
And happiness, that triumphant feeling
Only comes from within
But, you'll never make the grade
No you'll never, ever reach that plateau
You're down below
And it's where your soul will forever glow
It's just that bottomless inferno
You're in the depths of hell
And I think that's swell
And I hope you get well
Well done, fried in and out
Burned to a crisp, if that's what I wish
I didn't write the rules
I just follow them to a tee
Cause that's me, I'm evil
I'm hateful, I'm sinful, forgetful, mistrustful
I'm diseased and contagious
I'm suicide, homicide, genocide, pesticide
I'm a human bomb
I'll kill anyone
And so are you, so don't be coy
Cause you too can destroy me like a toy
Not like Mark Bowen
He never done nothin' to no one
That didn't deserve it
The song "Mark Bowen" by Faith No More is a track that dives deep into the concepts of love, happiness, and the struggles of reaching one's full potential. The opening lyrics describe love as a beginning, a justifiable means to an end, but true happiness can only come from within. The following statement that "you'll never make the grade" sets the tone for the rest of the song, as it describes the inner turmoil and feelings of being trapped within oneself, never able to reach that state of true happiness. Instead, the character in the song is depicted as being trapped in a bottomless inferno, surrounded by the depths of hell.
The second half of the song talks about the darker side of humanity, referencing themes of evil, hate, and disease. The character sings about being a "human bomb" and capable of killing anyone, along with the realization that others are capable of destroying him like a toy. However, the lyrics also hint at the idea that some individuals like Mark Bowen (whose identity remains unclear) have not done anything wrong and constantly suffer from society's unjust actions.
Overall, "Mark Bowen" is a profound song that delves into deep psychological and philosophical concepts, including love, happiness, pain, and societal injustices.
