After releasing six studio albums, including best-selling records The Real Thing (1989) and Angel Dust (1992), Faith No More officially announced its breakup on April 20, 1998. The band has since reunited, conducting The Second Coming Tour between 2009 and 2010, and releasing its seventh studio album, Sol Invictus, in May 2015. After the touring cycle of Sol Invictus, Faith No More went on hiatus once again. In November 2019, the band announced that it would reunite to embark on a 2020 UK and European tour, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this was postponed. Touring was due to recommence with a brief US tour in September 2021, followed by the previously postponed UK and Europe dates in June 2022, but all tour dates were cancelled with Patton citing mental health reasons.

I'm tugging on your cape
Tell me will your sons
Know their father one day
Leader of men
Leader of men
Get back in your cage
Like an American drug
Makes a mean cock grow
Chop a cow and kill a priest
Makes a superman of glass
Go go go go go go go go
The S on your chest
You're feeling like a god
An order of animal
We try to find a rod
Superhero, Sensei, Nero, smiling,
Hiding, riding, flying, sighing, sumo
Leader of men
Leader of men
Get back in your cage
Ain't no grave going to hold this body down
The sun rises here to save us now
All its all erase
Storybook years
Sweet memories
Wash it away
Wash it away
Wash it away
Leader of men
Leader of men
Leader of men
Will you be one of them?
Leader of men
Leader of men
Leader of men
Will you be one of them?
Leader of men
Leader of men
Leader of men
Will you be one of them?
Leader of men
Leader of men
Leader of men
Will you be on of them?
Leader of men
Leader of men
Leader of men
Will you be on of them?
The lyrics to Faith No More's song "Superhero" explore the concept of power and leadership, and how those in positions of authority can become corrupted by their own sense of superiority. The opening lines of the song, "I'm tugging on your cape, tell me will your sons know their father one day," suggests a sense of doubt and uncertainty about the legacy that the titular superhero will leave behind. The verses that follow depict a character who is both revered and feared, with the power to transform an "American drug" into a "superman of glass." The chorus, which repeats the phrase "Leader of men," reinforces the idea that this superhero is someone to be respected and followed, but also cautions against blindly accepting their authority.
The lyrics of "Superhero" are open to interpretation, but one possible reading is that they reflect the band's cynicism about authority and the abuse of power. The repeated refrain of "Get back in your cage/Will you be one of them?" suggests a fear that even the most noble of leaders can become corrupted by their power and influence. The references to a "cow" and a "priest" being chopped and killed also hint at violence and corruption. The final lines of the song suggest a desire to wash away the memories of a world that is fraught with danger and corruption.
