When To Her Lute Corinna Sings
Faith and the Muse Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Her voice revives the leaden strings
And doth on highest note appeare
As any challeng'd echo cleare
But when she doth of mourning speake
Ev'n with her sighs the strings do breake
And as her lute doth live or die
For when of pleasure she doth sing
My thoughts enjoy a sudden spring
But if she doth of sorrow speake
Ev'n from my hart the strings do breake
"When To Her Lute Corinna Sings" by Faith and the Muse is a ballad about the power of music and its impact on the human psyche. The song is about a woman named Corinna and her ability to breathe life into her lute that even revives the leaden strings when she sings. The lyrics suggest that her voice has a powerful effect on the strings, to the point where they break when she sings of sorrow. This reveals how deeply music can impact emotions and feelings.
The song goes on to describe how, as Corinna's lute lives or dies based on her passion, the singer of the song is led by Corinna's emotional state. There is a sense of dependency and entrancement that music can create within a person, almost like a metaphysical connection between the singer and the listener. When Corinna sings of pleasure, the singer's thoughts enjoy a sudden spring, but when she sings of sorrow, the singer's heartstrings break. The song suggests that music can have a powerful effect on emotions and that it can be an incredibly transformative experience.
Overall, "When To Her Lute Corinna Sings" by Faith and the Muse is a song about the power of music in evoking emotions and creating a deep sense of connection between the singer and the listener.
