Hand of God
Fall Out Boy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Been gone more days this year than I have been home
Trading friends for trips to the coast
This hotel room feels more like a tomb

Been gone more days this year than I have been home
Trading friends for trips to the coast
This hotel room feels more like a tomb
It's not gossip if it's the truth
I'm sick of always writing songs
For you to slit your wrists to

So which is it
The boy who writes the songs or the boy who's in them?
Who's the girl?
Is this truth or is he writing fiction?

Hand over my heart, gun to my head
I swear to God I'm through with this
I am the worst liar I know

It's not gossip if it's the truth
I'm sick of always writing songs for you to slit your wrists to

So which is it
The boy who writes the songs or the boy who's in them?
Who's the girl?
Is this truth or is he writing fiction?

Which is it
The boy who writes the songs or the boy who's in them?
Who's the girl?
Is this truth or is he writing fiction?

(So which is it?) So which is it? Which is it? (So which is it?)
(So which is it?) So which is it? Which is it? (So which is it?)
(So which is it?) So which is it? Which is it? (So which is it?)
(So which is it?) So which is it? Which is it?

Who's the girl?
Is this truth or is he writing fiction?
Which is it
The boy who writes the songs or the boy who's in them?
Who's the girl?
Is this truth or is he writing fiction?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Fall Out Boy's song Hand of God follow a theme of confusion and uncertainty. The singer is struggling with whether he is writing songs based on real life experiences or simply creating fictional storylines. He questions whether he is the boy who writes the songs or the boy who is in them, and whether the girl mentioned in the lyrics is someone from his past or a creation of his imagination. The theme of questioning the truth of one's experiences is reinforced with the repeated line "It's not gossip if it's the truth" and the confession that he is the worst liar he knows.

The lyrics also touch on the toll that being on the road and away from home can take on a person. The singer laments that he has spent more time away from home than he has spent there and that the hotel room feels like a tomb. He has been trading time with friends for trips to the coast, which may have been exciting at first but have now lost their allure.

Overall, the lyrics to Hand of God delve into the complexities of the creative process and how it can blur the lines between reality and fiction, as well as the challenges of maintaining relationships and a sense of home while on the road.

This comment won’t really matter to anyone but I remember this some from my freshman year of college. Limewire was still a thing (yes i’m getting old haha) but at the beginning of the year some people didn’t have their libraries on private and you could listen to other dorm mates playlists . Anyway I remember waking up from a nap hearing this song (especially the Pete screaming part) and falling back asleep. It wasn’t on my playlist so I never really knew what the name of this song was. Here 15 years later I finally googled “so which is it” and that’s why I’m here riding the nostalgia train and wishing for a simpler time. Hope you all stay well.

So, a friend of mine in school got this song from Limwire and he kept calling it Joe the Janitor. I think I finally solved the nostalgic puzzle. I'm right here with you!

When me and my best friend were in high school we worked at the concession stand during Friday night football games and when we would make nachos for people we would always yell “SO WE CHEESE IT WE CHEESE IT” while pumping the cheese on the chips, good times lol. To this day still one of my fav songs from my all time favorite band

every year near the end of summer i come back to this song. it’s kinda like a reminder of how things feel until i get a break from everything in life. the cycle continues but somehow i’m alright with it.

I have been looking for this song for nearly a decade and I finally found it! Back in the limewire days, this song was listed as "7 Minutes In Heaven" and that lead me on a wild goose chase bc I couldnt remember much of the lyrics years later lol. I truly thought I was living my own personal Mandela Effect for a while
