Twin Skeleton's
Fall Out Boy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a room in a hotel in New York City
That shares our fate and deserves our pity
I don't want to remember it all
The promises I made if you just hold on
Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on

And I just need enough of you to dull the pain
Just to get me through the night till we're twins again
Till we're stripped down to our skeletons again
Till we're saints just swimming in our sins again
And there's a jet black crow droning on and on and on
Up above our heads droning on and on and on
Keep making trouble till you find what you love
I need a new partner in crime and you just shrug

But there's a room in a hotel in New York City
That shares our fate and deserves our pity
I don't want to remember it all
The promises are made if you just hold on
Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on

A birth and a death on the same day
And, honey, I only appear so I can fade away
I wanna throw my hands in the air and scream
And I can just die laughing on your spiral of shame
And there's a jet black crow droning on and on and on
Up above our heads droning on and on and on
Hit it, never quit it, I have been through the wreck
But I can string enough to show my face in the light again

There's a room in a hotel in New York City
That shares our fate and deserves our pity
I don't want to remember it all
The promises are made if you just hold on

Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on

Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Fall Out Boy's song "Twin Skeleton's" appear to be about a relationship that has ended, but the singer is still clinging on to their memories and the promises of reuniting with their lover. The song speaks about a shared fate and an unfortunate room situated in a hotel in New York City. The room, which is a metaphor for their doomed relationship, deserves pity. The promises made are for holding on,  with the singer trying to forget everything that happened.

The chorus of the song seems to express the singer's desire to be with their lover again, and the pain that the separation is causing. The lyrics: "I just need enough of you to dull the pain, just to get me through the night until we're twins again, until we're stripped down to our skeletons again, until we're saints just swimming in our sins again," give a hint of the pain and longing they are feeling.

The second part of the song suggests that the relationship may have ended due to death. The lyrics, "Woke up inside a casket after thought that I missed her," and "a birth and a death on the same day," suggest that the singer may have died, and is mourning the relationship that ended too soon. The lines, "And honey I only appear so I can fade away, I wanna throw my hands in the air and scream," seem like a nod to the idea that the singer may be dead.

Some possible interpretations of the song include the idea that the singer is still struggling to move on from their past relationship or that they have passed away and are mourning. The song is somewhat ambiguous, and the listener may feel different emotions from the lyrics depending on their perspective.

Alright, I've got an odd theory: Twin Skeleton's is about a murder, particularly a murder inside of a relationship gone sour.
First off, there's a shit ton of deathly iconography in this song: jet black crows, skeletons, and two outright mentions of death: "Just die laughing on your spiral of shame" and "a birth and a death on the same day." That sets the foundation that something really rather horrific is going on in this song.
We can extrapolate that that something isn't entirely love- the lyrics aren't written like "Fourth of July" or "Favorite Record," which both instantly reek of love with lines talking of confession, beauty, and romantic regret. No; something worse is happening here, and I think it's a murder. Let's look at a few lines:
"There's a room in a hotel in NYC/That shares our fate and deserves our pity." Buildings that play host to murder are often condemned (catch the pun?) to be terrifying places, the kind you'd see in a Ray Bradbury short. Dwellings where murders have taken place have their lives, if you will, cut short. They share the fate, in a way, of those who die there.
"I don't want to remember at all/The promises I made if you just hold on." The promises in mention could very well be the promises of the honeymoon period of an abusive relationship- it will never happen again, I didn't mean it, it's all going to be okay. The murder at the heart of the song is, I believe, the culmination of one too many of these broken promises.
"Till we're saints just swimming in our sins again." Murderers often believe they are saints. They aggrandize their self image into almost godlike proportions. More over, they often believe themselves- if you get into the especially sinister murderers- to be on missions from God or that they are messiahs, which this verse could be referencing.
"And there's a jet black crow droning on and on and on." Any good history buff knows that crows are more often than not seen as harbingers of death, as ominous omens that something bad- I mean really [freaking] bad- is about to happen. See Julius Caesar by Shakespeare for evidence.
"A birth and a death on the same day." While the person dies, a reputation- that of a violent, fanatical murderer- is born. There is a birth of newfound fame, of newfound recognition; perhaps, this is what our murderer sought all along.
There you have it, folks. Thoughts from my head at 1:30 AM.
