What a Catch Donnie
Fall Out Boy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And the self-esteem to match
What a catch, what a catch
Whoa
You'll never catch us
So just let me be
Said I'll be fine
Miss Flack said I still want you back
Yeah, Miss Flack said I still want you back
I got troubled thoughts
And the self-esteem to match
What a catch, what a catch
And all I can think of
Is the way I'm the one
Who charmed the one
Who gave up on you
Who gave up on you
They say the captain
Goes down with the ship
So, when the world ends
Will God go down with it?
Miss Flack said I still want you back
Yeah, Miss Flack said I still want you back
I got troubled thoughts
And the self-esteem to match
What a catch, what a catch
And all I can think of
Is the way I'm the one
Who charmed the one
Who gave up on you
Who gave up on you
What a catch
What a catch
What a catch
What a catch
I will never end up like him
Behind my back, I already am
Keep a calendar
This way you will always know
I got troubled thoughts
And the self-esteem to match
What a catch, what a catch
And all I can think of
Is the way I'm the one
Who charmed the one
Who gave up on you
Who gave up on you
Where is your boy tonight?
I hope he is a gentleman
Maybe he won't find out what I know
You were the last good thing
We're going down, down in an earlier round
And sugar, we're goin' down swinging
Dance, dance, we're falling apart to halftime
Dance, dance, and these are the lives you'd love to lead
Dance, this is the way they'd love
If they knew how misery loved me
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race
One night and one more time
Thanks for the memories
Even though they weren't so great
He tastes like you, only sweeter
Growing up, growing up
I got troubled thoughts
And the self-esteem to match
What a catch, what a catch
"What a Catch, Donnie" is a song by Fall Out Boy featuring guest vocals from a number of other musicians, including Elvis Costello, Brendon Urie, Gabe Saporta, Travis McCoy, and William Beckett. The song is about feeling troubled and insecure, but also about the importance of self-reflection and self-care. The lyrics are filled with metaphors and references to other Fall Out Boy songs, as well as to popular culture.
The verses of the song describe the singer's troubled thoughts and low self-esteem, as well as his longing for someone who has given up on him. The chorus repeats the phrase "What a catch" as a sarcastic commentary on the singer's sense of self-worth. The song also includes a reference to the old saying "the captain goes down with the ship", with the singer questioning whether God will go down with the world at the end of times.
The song's guest vocals were chosen to represent different aspects of the emo/pop punk scene, with each singer lending their own unique style and perspective to the song. The song has been interpreted by some as a meta-commentary on the emo/pop punk genre, with the references to Fall Out Boy's own songs and the overall theme of self-reflection and self-doubt suggesting that the band is aware of the limitations and cliches of the genre.

The things Patrick reels up/ Easter eggs I thought were worth mentioning:
-The antlers were a reference to the concept mv of sugar we’re going down.
-The dress shirt was to represent the mv for dance dance.
-the single part of Andy’s drum set floating in the water. I believe this shows how fall out boy was falling apart. After all, this was the last mv recorded before they called hiatus.
- The light up FOB letters in the ocean: From Thnks fr the mmrs mv in the hotel room and on the stage.
-The remix of their top songs: Grand theft autumn, sugar we’re going down, dance dance, this ain’t a scene it’s an arms race, thnks fr th mmrs.
-The sinking ship: could be a reference to the lyric in Don’t you know who I think I am? “We walk the plank on a sinking ship.”
-Brendon Urie is in the mv

Always an Upside
Well, imagine you’re in his position, this man you’ve looked up to for forever, the man who signed your band, the man who helped you be you and be confident, one of your closest friends. Imagine this man writing a song about how he wanted to kill himself, imagine hearing that this song is about how he won’t. Imagine you’re Brendon and the very person you looked up to became so utterly human to you and asked you to be a part of his promise that he’d be ok. Of course you’d give it your all
Always an Upside
Sorry for the sudden feels
