Between Blue And Me
Family Lyrics

J. Whitney / R. Chapman

Road maps revive an old story
Showing the distance from you
Look to the sea
Between blue and me
And it's you
And though there are words we're exchanging
When will I see you again
It's been a year
Since you were here
My friend

Waves of emotion, sea of joy
Times of sadness and one small boy
Empty harbour, ship set sail
I'm home to nothing 'cept a siren's wail
His father's a sailor and a travelling man
Yes he left this morning with a shake of the hand
His mother's a lady who forgets she's a wife
And she's making sure on a different score of life

Waves of emotion, sea of joy
Times of sadness and one small boy
Empty harbour, ship set sail
I'm home to nothing 'cept a siren's wail
His father's a sailor and a travelling man
Yes he left this morning for a faraway land
His mother's a lady who forgets she's a wife
yes she's making sure on a different score of life

Look to the sea

Between blue and me
And it's you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Family's song "Between Blue and Me" are melancholic and emotive. At the heart of the song is a separation between two people, possibly friends or even lovers, who are dealing with the pain of distance and absence. The opening line mentions road maps, which serve as a metaphor for the physical distance between the two people. The singer looks out to the sea, which represents the vast expanse between them, the 'blue' being the loneliness and longing that they feel. The phrase "between blue and me" is repeated throughout the song, indicating that this is a recurring thought in the singer's mind - a constant reminder of the separation.

As the song progresses, we get a sense of the complexity of the relationship. The first verse tells us that there are words being exchanged, but there is no indication of when they will be reunited. The second verse provides a glimpse into the life of a young boy whose father is a sailor and often away, leaving the rest of the family feeling abandoned and alone. There's a sense of resentment towards the boy's mother, who seems to have forgotten her role as a wife and is focused on her own life. These lyrics depict a family in disarray, with no real sense of stability or security.

The final verse returns to the theme of separation, with the singer once more looking out to the sea. The repetition of "and it's you" emphasizes the longing and need for connection. The last line of the song, "Look to the sea, between blue and me, and it's you," suggests that despite the distance and the difficulties, the singer still holds a strong connection to the other person.

Overall, "Between Blue and Me" is a poignant and emotionally charged song that explores the pain of separation and the desperate desire for human connection.

"This album is dedicated to all the people who have pulled strokes for or against us, for they shall be called fearless". Back cover liner notes of the album. The creativity of this band and this era was astounding and will never be repeated. 44 years down the road and still brilliant. Nobody sang like Roger Chapman.

Fearless indeed. I have a now departed and very dear friend who saw Family, or maybe it was The Farinas, at Leicester University, mid/late 60s where he was a student . At some point Roger took umbrage at heckling directed his way. He leapt into the audience and tried to throttle the offender with his microphone lead. He was dragged off, both survived, honours even. And don't forget the donkey - "daft I call it".

Very Well Said, dgrichmondbc... where the "family's" unique ensemble, lyrics and arrangements are definitely A Slice of History!! 👌
I awakened this morning to "flashes" of 50 years ago.... where FEARLESS 'popped to mind', and instinctively patched the laptop thru to the Big Screen.... 👉 And at an unapologetically Disgraceful VOLUME....!!!! 👍

Well, I must say, there's certainly a "similarity" to Ray Charles and Roger Chapman would be the first to admit it (he has often)...but I like Chapman 1,000,000 times better, of course...

As recordist bassist I can feel confident saying any of the great bands Wetton played with are blessed by tastfull perfect harmony. I 💘 this album ever since my older brother gave me his copy in 77.

I bought this album in the early seventies after hearing " Larf and sing". This album still sounds great, maybe because it was never overplayed on the airwaves. It's good to hear that there are still people out there who remember and appreciate this singular and talented band.
