Family - My Friend The Sun
Well, I know that you're lonely, come in from the cold
Your shoes they need mending, your clothes they look old
Won't you pick up your pieces, it's never too late
Though it's never early to make a mistake
As soon as you wake

Although there's been rain and it's coming again
Change has to be here obviously
Though my friend the sun looks well on the run
He's there in the distance if you care to see

Well, I know that you're waiting, come out from your shell
There'll come a time you'll remember it well
When you take all the good times from chances you've had
Chances you've made and what you've learnt from the bad
It's never so sad

Although there's been rain and it's coming again
Change has to be here obviously
Though my friend the sun looks well on the run
He's there in the distance if you care to see - see

If the season were reason, then there'd be no doubt
A sequel of changes worth putting you out
But on the question of whether you heard a lie
Answer yourself looking straight in his eyes
Don't you realize

Although there's been rain and it's coming again
Change has to be here obviously

Though my friend the sun looks well on the run
He's there in the distance if you care to see - see

This song is just one of those small masterpieces that hits all the buttons without you realising it. Its a lovely kind song with a warm melody, presented with great delicacy and feeling. I've always loved it.

I always get quite emotional listening to this, because in my head this its perfection! Everything fits tightly into a beautiful little tune that has lifted me from the depths of despair to a much better place in the space of four and a half minutes. Awesome song!

Beautiful song…I went to see Elton October 222, 1972 in Anaheim, CA with Family opening act. My first date and unbeknownst to me at the time it was her birthday. Family took the stage and immediately someone at the front of the stage yelled “Fearless” and I knew this was going to be good. Non stop raw power from Roger and Charlie (along with Poli Palmer, Rob Townsend and Jim Cregan). Bandstand was just released and I think that they played most of the songs on that LP. When we left, we went to Shakey’s Pizza (which was about to close for the evening). Got a medium pepperoni pizza and I went to the liquor store for a couple of sodas and we had late dinner in my car. One of the best nights of my life…
I went out and purchased Bandstand and Fearless the next day.
I’ve been a fan ever since.

For Alex.  This was played at his funeral today.  There was hail and rain when we went in.  When we emerged the sun had come out and there was a clear blue sky.
I know it was only coincidence, but it was nice nonetheless.
