Icarus
Fana Hues Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Ahh) Oh, how the feels fill the room I could melt to touch
(Ahh) And all that I ever need is right here between us
(Ahh) You're so cruel
I fade to blue

How did I get so close?
Prolly God only knows
Saw the signs, still I go
Done it all on my own
How did I?

Mama told me, "Don't you never ever give yourself away"
But that's just how shit flows
That's how shit flows, mm

(Ahh) I always crash fall down to the truth
(Ahh) More of the same old plays ain't shit new
Wild is the wind that carries me home
While I lick my wounds
Uh-uh-uh Uh-uh Uh-uh Uh-uh-uh

How did I get so close (Get so close)
Prolly God only knows
Saw the signs, still I go
Done it all on my own
How did I?

Mama told me, "Don't you never ever give yourself away"

But that's just how shit flows (Yeah, yeah)
That's how shit goes (Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah), mm

Overall Meaning

The song "Icarus" by Fana Hues is a reflection of the singer's feelings of vulnerability and fragility in a relationship. The singer expresses the intensity of the emotions in the room, which she could "melt to touch." The feelings seem to be authentic and reciprocal between the couple, as the singer acknowledges that everything she needs is between them. However, the singer also recognizes the cruel manner in which her significant other treats her, enough to make her fade to blue, indicating a feeling of sadness or a lack of emotional energy.

The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "How did I get so close?" as the singer reflects on the intensity of her emotions and feelings for her significant other. She confesses to having seen the signs that could have foretold the outcome of the relationship, but still went in anyways, having done it "all on her own." The singer reflects on the advice her mother gave her, warning her never to give herself away. However, the chorus concludes by acknowledging the inevitability of this pattern of behavior, as she states, "But that's just how shit flows, that's how shit goes."

The song is ultimately a lamentation of the singer's feelings of powerlessness and inability to control the intense emotions she feels for her significant other, even when the relationship may not be as healthy as it should be. The title "Icarus" is an allusion to the Greek myth of a young man who flew too close to the sun with wings made of feathers and wax. Icarus, too, was overwhelmed by the intensity of his emotions and lost control, resulting in his tragic fall.

Issa Rae stay putting me on artists I haven't heard of. The flower theme, warm toned clothes, and natural hair is beautiful!

Yeah, Issa Rae put me onto Baby Rose last year. I doubt I would have found her or Fana Hues on my own.

you know there is no justice in the world when songs like this aren’t recognized enough

It might even be more just if they put the source of the main riff of this song in the information section. It's the main theme for the 1969 movie Midnight Cowboy, which won the Oscar for Best Picture. It was written by John Barry, who is famous for the music for James Bond movies and lots of others. He won a Grammy award for this song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGORPUzLxtU

Here's a different version of the Midnight Cowboy Theme that was a pretty prominent radio hit for the keyboard duo Ferrante & Teicher: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LI0PPWc_a9Q
