Rock It
Fast Eddie Clarke/Lemmy/Phil Taylor Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If I could stick my hand in my heart
Spill it all over the stage
Would it satisfy, would it slide on by
Would you think the boy is strange, ain't he strange?

If I could win you, if I could sing you
A love song so divine
Would it be enough for your cheating heart
If I broke down and cried, if I cried?

Said, I know it's only rock 'n' roll, I like it
I know it's only rock 'n' roll, like it, like it, yes I do
I said I like it, said I like it, I said I like it
Baby, can't you see this old boy has been a lonely?

If I could stick your knife in my heart
Suicide right on stage
Would it be enough for your teenage lust
Would it help to ease the pain, ease your brain?

If I could dig down deep in my heart
Feelings would flood on the page
Would it satisfy, would it slide on by
Would you think the boy's insane, he's insane

Well, I know it's only rock 'n' roll, I like it
I know it's only rock 'n' roll, like it, like it, yes I do
I said I like it, I said I like it, said I like it
Baby, can't you see this old boy has been a lonely?

I bet you think that you're the only girl around
I bet you think that you're the only boy in town, town,

Well, I know it's only rock 'n' roll, I like it
I know it's only rock 'n' roll, I like it
I know it's only rock 'n' roll, I like it
I know it's only rock 'n' roll, like it, like it, yes I do
I said I like it, said I like it, I said I like it, well, how do you fuckin' like it?

I said, I know it's only rock 'n' roll but I like it, yeah
Only rock 'n' roll but I like it, yeah
Only rock 'n' roll but I like it, yeah
Only rock 'n' roll but I like it, yeah
Only rock 'n' roll but I like it, yeah
Only rock 'n' roll but I like it, yeah
Only rock 'n' roll but I like it, yeah
Only rock 'n' roll but I like it, yeah
Only rock 'n' roll but I like it, ooh

Right, I know it's only rock 'n' roll, yeah
I know it's only rock 'n' roll, yeah

I know it's only rock 'n' roll, one more
I know it's only rock 'n' roll, like it, like it, yes I do

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Fast Eddie Clarke, Lemmy, and Phil Taylor's song "Rock It" are not easily interpreted. They seem to be an introspective look at the nature of rock and roll, the passion of the performer, and the role of the audience. The opening lines ask if the emotions expressed in the music would be enough to satisfy the performer's inner demons. The chorus acknowledges that it is only rock and roll, but the performer still likes it, and in a way, it is therapeutic for him. The final part of the song references the idea that even though the audience might think they are unique, ultimately, they are just part of a larger group that loves rock and roll.

The verses continue with the theme of introspection and exploring the limits of what is acceptable on stage. The singer contemplates sticking his hand in his heart, spilling it all over the stage, and even committing suicide on stage. These are obviously extreme ideas, but they touch on the idea that performers are willing to go to extreme lengths to express their emotions and convey their message.

One interpretation of the song is that it is a commentary on the nature of rock and roll, which is often seen as primitive, raw, and emotional. The singer seems to be asking if these primal emotions are enough to satisfy both himself and the audience. At the same time, he acknowledges that rock and roll is just rock and roll, and ultimately, it may not be enough to solve all of his problems.

Overall, "Rock It" is a complex and introspective song that touches on many different themes related to the nature of rock and roll and the emotions that it evokes.

@keefriff99

He was a crazy bastard in the best sense, and a hell of a great drummer.

RIP, Philthy.

@dynamo4543

@John Beaver he is a great drummer he was kicked out by Lemmy because of his habits

@northernthrifter8817

@John Beaver lemmy is rare breed though he's a very high functioning addict but many addicts can't do what lemmy did he was a one off.

It really blows my mind how Lemmy functioned at the level he did on that shit. I have no experience or interest in amphetamines, but most people who end up hooked on it look and sound insane. How he held it together until 70, I'll never know.

@gwarbong

well said. and great profile picture.
