Virus
Fastlane Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Take a breath and listen in,
try and work it out from wondering,
you said you want it too,
but you've given up.

Taken back from what was then,
no use understanding whats within,
you said that wasn't true,
and just given up.

don't leave me now,
you said you wanted more,
don't leave me now, alone.

try and smile,
you've caught the virus,
of lonely times.
still i smile,
you caught the virus scars.

set aside the things you see
live the life that left you crumbling,
out of sight is out of mind,
and thats good enough.

your presence branded, left on me
in the cold alone, i'm worn again.
tainted, fallen down, i'm not getting up

don't leave me now,
you said you wanted more,
don't leave me now, alone.

try and smile,
you've caught the virus,
of lonely times
still i smile,
you've caught the virus scars.

make way for life,
(make way for life),
so that i don't have to build them up inside.

forget your ways.

try and smile,
you've caught the virus,
of lonely times.

still i smile,
you've caught the virus scars.,

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Fastlane's song Virus convey deep emotions of loneliness and abandonment that one experiences when a close friend or lover chooses to give up on life. The first stanza expresses the singer's plea to the person who has given up, urging them to take a breath and listen in, try and work it out from wondering, and not to leave him now as they had promised to go through it all together. The second stanza contrasts the present with the past, where the person had backed out of their commitment to be there for the singer, leaving him to catch the virus of lonely times and scars. The third and final stanza concludes with a call to make way for life and forget old ways, so that the singer does not have to carry the burden of building up his life inside.

The lyrics use a metaphor of a virus to describe the feeling of loneliness that is contagious and spreading between people, leaving scars that linger even after they leave. The song captures the sadness and desperation that one feels when they lose someone important and are left alone to deal with the aftermath. The message of the song is to encourage people to stay true to their commitments and to fight against giving up on their loved ones, even when times get tough.
