Is This The Future?
Fatback Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We can put a man up in space
But on earth it's just a rat race.
Is this the future?

We got people workin' 9 to 5
While over 10 percent are trying to stay alive.
Is this the future?
Crime is up, education is down
But the Dow Jones is on the rebound.
Is this the future?

Ronald Reagan says stay the course
But only a fool would wanna endorse
This kind of future.

Everyday as I go my way
I can hear the people as they say,
"Hey brother can you spare a dime,
I don' wanna end up doin' time."
But they say it's just a sign of the future.

Found a car I thought I'd buy
but the interest rates were just too high.
Is this the future?

Worked years perfecting my craft
Now my boss is giving me the shaft.
Is this the future?

Used to eat steaks and caviar
Now it's peanut butter in a candy bar.
Is this the future?

All my money is nearly spent
Don't have enough to pay the rent
You can cancel the future.

Can it be? Are you tellin' me
This is the future?

Overall Meaning

In Fatback Band's song Is This the Future?, the lyrics question whether the future that we are working towards is an ideal one or not. The opening lines talk about how we have managed to achieve great things like putting a man up in space, but on earth, the situation is just a rat race. It shows the contrast between what we could achieve and what we have failed to do. The following lines talk about the struggles of the people in everyday life. They work hard to make ends meet while ten percent of the population is struggling to survive. The lyrics go on to point out that while crime is up, education is down, and the economy fluctuates, politicians like Ronald Reagan ask people to stay the course, and only a fool would accept this kind of future.

The song's overall message is that the present situation is not ideal, and the future seems bleak. The verses illustrate how people's quality of life is gradually declining. They cannot afford to buy a car or a house, have to work long hours while getting paid less, and are forced to rely on cheap food alternatives. The chorus asks a rhetorical question, "Is this the future?", emphasizing that people are uncertain about what lies ahead. The final lines sarcastically show how people have to beg for change to avoid going to jail or having a future that seems predetermined.

Wow, this song actually predicted the future exactly.

@greeneggz_n_ham

It wasn't predicting, it was remembering. Most of what we see happening now has happened before.

We've had sky-high prices before, we've had energy crises before, we've had climate crises before, rampant racism, inequality, police brutality, state sanctioned violence against citizens, state sanctioned violence against non-citizens, state sanctioned corruption. All of that... we've had here before.

This is nothing new in America.

@0dayswithoutincident934

@@greeneggz_n_ham So essentially, history repeated itself.

@WocklessGamingforAnimeMoms

@@greeneggz_n_ham Kinda got worse progressively with less improvement.
