Star 69
Fatboy Slim Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What the fuck?
They know what is what,
But they don't know what is what,
They just strut.

What the fuck?

They just know,
What they know,

What they don't know,
What is what.

Overall Meaning

The opening lyrics of Fatboy Slim's song Star 69 are a colorful expression of confusion and frustration with the state of society. The repeated question "what the fuck?" implies a sense of anger and disbelief at the world around the singer. The following line "they know what is what, but they don't know what is what, they just strut" suggests a disillusionment with those in power who claim to have all the answers, but in reality, are blindly following their own egos and agendas. This is an indictment of those who hold positions of authority but do not act in the best interest of society.

The second stanza continues to explore the theme of ignorance and arrogance. The phrase "they just know what they know" implies a lack of curiosity or openness to learning new things. This reinforces the idea that the powerful prefer to remain in their own echo chambers, oblivious to the larger truths of the world. Finally, the line "what they don't know, what is what" implies that this closed-mindedness ultimately leads to a lack of understanding and confusion. The phrase "what is what" can be interpreted as a search for truth and meaning in a world that seems to make little sense.

Overall, Star 69 is a scathing critique of society and those in positions of power. The repeated use of the phrase "what the fuck" coupled with powerful imagery suggests a sense of anger and frustration with the state of the world. The song ultimately calls for greater humility, openness, and awareness of the larger forces at play in the world.

@calixa

I saw Carl Cox in Vancouver in the October of 2000, and at like 2am he dropped this track and this was at least a month before street date of this album. The place went absolutely BANANAS for this song nobody had ever heard. It was engrained in my brain and then I bought the new Fatboy and freaked out again hearing that song. Great great memories of that night at the Palladium. It was truly the sweatiest I'd ever been after partying. I can still picture it. It was an amazing time. Still have my ticket stub.
