Ballad Of The Dying Man
Father John Misty Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Naturally the dying man wonders to himself
Has commentary been more lucid than anybody else?
And had he successively beaten back the rising tide
Of idiots, dilettantes, and fools
On his watch while he was alive
Lord, just a little more time

Oh, in no time at all
This'll be the distant past
Ooh

So says the dying man once I'm in the box
Just think of all the overrated hacks running amok
And all of the pretentious, ignorant voices that will go unchecked
The homophobes, hipsters, and 1%
The false feminists he'd managed to detect
Oh, who will critique them once he's left?

Oh, in no time at all
This'll be the distant past

What he'd give for one more day to rate and analyze
The world made in his image as of yet
To realize what a mess to leave behind

Eventually the dying man takes his final breath
But first checks his news feed to see what he's 'bout to miss
And it occurs to him a little late in the game
We leave as clueless as we came
For the rented heavens to the shadows in the cave
We'll all be wrong someday

Oh

Overall Meaning

, Father John Misty's song "Ballad of the Dying Man" is a commentary on the human ego and its obsession with leaving a lasting legacy. The song is written from the perspective of a dying man who, in his final moments, reflects on his life and the impact he has had on the world. The dying man wonders if his commentary has been more profound than anyone else's and if he has successfully stood up against a rising tide of foolishness that threatens to overwhelm the world. He longs for just a little more time to fine-tune his analysis of the world he has helped shape.

The dying man is both amazed and frustrated by how fleeting and ephemeral life can be. He knows that in no time at all, his legacy will be forgotten, and society will move on without him. He bemoans the fact that overrated hacks and pretentious voices will continue to proliferate in his absence, unchallenged and unchecked. He wishes he had a little more time to set the world right and leave behind an enduring legacy. But in the end, he realizes that everyone, no matter how intelligent or insightful, is ultimately clueless in the face of life's mysteries.

In summary, the song is a scathing critique of the human ego and its need for validation and recognition. Father John Misty brilliantly captures the paradox of human existence in a world where everything is temporary and fleeting, and our impact on the world is short-lived.

I just heard this song for the first time this morning while driving my daughter to school. One of those rare songs that's so amazing you almost drive off the road. The lyrics are wonderfully eloquent and the music brings to my mind a lot of what was great in early 70's rock.
