Just For You
Father Son and Friends Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's nice to be lonely for a while
You're feeling down don't wanna be found that's you
You're in your space but it's light somewhere
You look outside and you still realize it's true
You're like me you get a little bit colder
Right on track to be the one who can't be found
If you're like me you can't tell when it's all over
You're just like me you're not around
You ever been alone when your head don't work
You fake a smile but you can't decide who's who
Well I got a feeling it's not just me
I know it when I see it and you think I don't believe it but I do
You're like me you get a little bit colder
Right on track to be the one who can't be found
If you're like me you can't tell when it's all over
You're just like me you're not around
Well I loved you then
And I know some good will come back again
Come back again
Don't wanna be lonely it's been enough time
I'm feeling down I wanna be found that's you
But if you can hold on and try to be strong
You'll found out how that your time is now it's true
You're like me you get a little bit colder
Right on track to be the one who can't be found
If you're like me you can't tell when it's all over
You're just like me you're not around

You're just like me you're not around
You're just like me you're not around

Overall Meaning

The song "Just For You" by Father Son and Friends is an ode to being the guy that a girl can bring home to her mother. The lyrics exude confidence and reassurance, assuring the girl that he is the kind of man who will treat her with respect and dignity. The repetition of the phrase "I am the guy you can bring home to mom" at the end of each stanza is a bold proclamation of his intentions.

The first verse sets the tone for the rest of the song, with the singer emphasizing his good behavior and manners. He promises to use a fork and napkin and not eat like a slob, except when it comes to popcorn. He also clarifies his religious affiliation, assuring the girl's mother that they believe in the same Jesus who rose from the grave. In the second verse, he speaks to his own past, explaining that he has been divorced but that doesn't mean he has given up on love or himself. He implores that he shouldn't have to bear the weight of other people's sins, and the scars on his cheeks are evidence of his fight.

The chorus repeats the opening phrase, "I am the guy you can bring home to mom," emphasizing the idea that the singer is reliable, trustworthy, and respectful. The final lines speak to the simplicity of the song and the importance of honesty in relationships. The three chords, song, melody, and honesty, are all that are needed to communicate the singer's intentions.

“Father and Son” (1970), one of Cat Stevens’ best compositions, was initially intended as a duet for a stage musical that never materialized. A conversation, a dialogue, an argument* masterfully performed by Cat Stevens portraying distinctively both characters : the father in a deeper register, the son in a higher one.

The producers of “Moulin Rouge!” (2001) wished to borrow “Father and Son” for the film, but the author denied them the opportunity. As a matter of fact, much of the plot of the movie was based on the song, so the whole script had to be rewritten. David Bowie’s “Nature Boy” was used instead.

Though it seems to be autobiographical, the piece is not, for the most part, claimed Cat Stevens.

In 2007, the singer-songwriter re-recorded the hit under his new name (since 1978), Yusuf Islam.

No wonder “Father and Son” became so popular : the topic is fundamentally relatable, universal and timeless, isn’t it? ❤️ 🌎 ❤️

* If each concerned father could recall his own past as a son himself, MANKIND would be better off.

It's not time to make a change
Just relax, take it easy
You're still young, that's your fault
There's so much you have to know
Find a girl, settle down
If you want you can marry
Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy

I was once like you are now
And I know that it's not easy
To be calm when you've found
Something going on
But take your time, think a lot
Think of everything you've got
For you will still be here tomorrow
But your dreams may not

How can I try to explain?
When I do he turns away again
It's always been the same, same old story
From the moment I could talk
I was ordered to listen
Now there's a way
And I know that I have to go away
I know I have to go

It's not time to make a change
Just relax, take it slowly
You're still young, that's your fault
There's so much you have to go through
Find a girl, settle down
If you want you can marry
Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy

All the times that I've cried
Keeping all the things I knew inside
It's hard, but it's harder to ignore it
If they were right I'd agree
But it's them they know, not me
Now there's a way
And I know that I have to go away
I know I have to go

“It’s funny to think about the things in your life that can make you cry just knowing that they existed, can then become the same thing that make you cry knowing that they’re now gone. I think those things come into our lives to help us get from one place to a better one.” ~ Coach Ted Lasso, from America.

We’re going to miss you, Ted.
