Bo Weevil
Fats Domino Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

On Saturday night, where I was born, down on the farm
Guitar plinking and we started singing 'til the break of dawn
About twelve o'clock ev'rything gets hot, up steps old Jones
We started clappin' and he started singin' a sweet little country song

Bo Weevil, Bo Weevil, where've you been all day
Your momma's been lookin', hasn't stopped lookin' since you went away
Bo Weevil, Bo Weevil, where did you go and stay
Your momma's been lookin', hasn't stopped lookin' since you went away

Overall Meaning

The opening lines from Fats Domino's song, Bo Weevil, set the scene for a joyous Saturday night on the farm. The plinking of a guitar leads to a sing-along, which lasts until dawn. The sense of togetherness is palpable. However, things take a turn for the worse when Old Jones enters the scene.

Old Jones steps up, and before long, is singing a sweet little country song. It is at this point that the true meaning behind the lyrics of Bo Weevil comes to light. The song is about the Bo Weevil, a pest that destroyed cotton crops across the Southern United States in the early 20th century. The Bo Weevil's impact on Southern agriculture was devastating, and it left many people out of work.

This song brings back so many good memories of my riding around with my Dad. He used to play Fats in the car, mom would play Elvis. This was the 70's. Yeah, they raised me right.

Your parents raised you up right man. In the 1970’s, when I was a lad,my father raised me up on the greatest music in the world as well. Sam cooke, BB King, John Lee Hooker and the rest of the greats my father had on stereo 8-track tapes. My personal favorite was the immortal Sam cooke and the great BB King. That was pure heaven back in those days. From my childhood memories.
