If You Need Me
Fats Domino Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you need me, call my name
I'll come a running like a choo choo train
Always love you, always feel the same

You told me a lie
You made, made me cry
I'll always love you 'till the day I die
I'm going far away
And I'm going, going to stay
If you don't see me no more, meet me on Judgment Day

But if you need me, call my name

I'll come a running like a choo choo train
Always love you, always feel the same

Overall Meaning

The singer promises to always be there for their love interest, should they need them. The imagery of a "choo choo train" emphasizes the speed and urgency with which the singer will come to the rescue.

The second stanza reveals that the love interest has lied to the singer, causing them to cry. However, the singer still pledges their eternal love, promising to feel the same way until their dying day. The final stanza acknowledges that the singer may be leaving for a while, but still implores the love interest to call upon them if necessary. The repeated refrain of "always love you, always feel the same" emphasizes the constancy of the singer's love.

Overall, the song's message is one of steadfast commitment in the face of adversity. It speaks to the power of love to overcome obstacles and endure even in difficult circumstances.

Fats recorded "If You Need Me " tree times: Oct.27 1953, Nov. 7 1955 ( that one is lost!) and Oct. 30 1958. This one is from 58. But I`m sure one of the others are not the same song as this one. I have to remember to ask Mr. Domino about this when I visit him in N.O. in september.

I bought a Fats LP in 1957 that included this version of this song. Looks like it was the 1953 recording.

Neil Thompson

this is the 1953 recording - the one that was released in 1960 (but recorded in 1958) is a different song to this one
