Lady Madonna
Fats Domino Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lady Madonna children at your feet
Wonder how you manage to make ends meet
Now who finds the money when you pay the rent
Did you think that money was heaven sent

Friday night arrives without no suitcase
Sunday morning creeping like a nun
Monday's child has learned to tie his boot lace
See how they run

Lady Madonna lying cross your bed
Listen to the music playing in your head

See how they run
Lady Madonna children at your feet
Wonder how you manage to make ends meet
Tuesday afternoon is never ending

Wednesday morning papers didn't come
Thursday night your stocks needed mending
See how they run

Lady Madonna children at your breast
Wonder how you manage to feed the rest

Overall Meaning

Lady Madonna is a song by Fats Domino that describes the daily life of a single mother of several children struggling to make ends meet. The song describes how Lady Madonna manages to feed and take care of her children despite facing financial challenges. The lyrics also suggest that Lady Madonna may have made some mistakes in her life and asks whether she believed that money was heaven sent. The verse "Friday night arrives without no suitcase, Sunday morning creeping like a nun" talks about how Lady Madonna is unable to go out and have fun like others her age because she has a lot of responsibilities which she must attend to.

The chorus of the song, which repeats twice, is "See how they run, Lady Madonna, children at your feet, Wonder how you manage to make ends meet." The lyrics are an observation of the children that Lady Madonna has to take care of, and the struggles that come with this responsibility. The second verse follows the same pattern as the first, but instead of Friday night, it is Tuesday afternoon that is never-ending. The third verse speaks of the papers not arriving on Wednesday morning, suggesting that Lady Madonna's life is unpredictable and full of surprises. The fourth and final verse describes how Lady Madonna manages to feed her children despite having little money, suggesting that she is a hardworking and resourceful woman.

i love it. It's actually quite a remarkable recording if you think about it. Its funny to hear the influence come back the other way.. It's amazing that Fats recorded this song specifically because Paul said Fats Domino was the very inspiration behind him writing it. And i think Fats knocked it out of the park, it fit him like a glove, they were some wise guys them Lennon/ McCartney guys... lol

Nick both Beatles AND Fata music seemed to compliment each other in terms of gente and influence so its easy to see why McCarthey and Harrison were inspired by him, all 3 are legends in equal measure i feel, woulda been amazing to have seen Fats do concerts with The Beatles, i woulda killed any species to have witnessed that

@brianphillips1374

Domino was supposed to record it first, but couldn't due to scheduling conflict. I'm glad it was a hit for him, as well.
