Reeling and Rocking
Fats Domino Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I brought my rockin' chair, put it in my back yard
My baby went away and left me, and that ain't all

She left me reelin' and a-rocking, talking all out my head
She left me reelin' and a-rocking, talking all out my head
Well and I feel so bad, I wish that I was dead

[Instrumental]

That's why I'm gonna go away, won't be back till fall
If I find me a good little girl, I won't come back at all

I won't be reeling and a-rocking, talking all out my head
I won't be reeling and a-rocking, talking all out my head
And I'll be feeling so glad, I'll never wish I was dead

[Instrumental]

Overall Meaning

Fats Domino's song "Reeling and Rocking" is a classic rock 'n' roll track that encompasses the rawness and energy of early rock 'n' roll. The song revolves around the singer who is lamenting over his lost love, who left him feeling devastated and disorientated. He has set up his rocking chair in the backyard and tries to cope with his pain by reeling and rocking in it. The singer is talking all out of his head, as he tries to come to terms with his loss. He feels so low that he wishes he was dead.

The lyrics showcase the jitteriness and vulnerability of the singer, who finds it difficult to process his emotions. The musical instruments, including the saxophone, piano, and drums, complement the lyrics by creating a frantic and upbeat melody. The instrumental segments provide a perfect break from the narrative, and the saxophone solo in the middle highlights the modernity of the song. The singer's voice is smooth yet powerful, and his enunciation adds to the charm of the song.

Overall, Fats Domino's "Reeling and Rocking" is a compelling and raw showcase of early rock 'n' roll's essence, combining captivating lyrics with a catchy beat.

I was so sad to hear that Antoine "Fats" Domino has passed away and left the world this morning. The pride of New Orleans Louisiana "Fats" who with his boogie-woogie bouncing piano style helped create and invent "Rock & Roll" back in the early and mid 50's. He inspired so many. Signed to the Imperial record label, "Fats" burst on the scene with "Ain't that a shame" in 1955 and the rest is Rock & Roll" history and selling millions of records through out the years! He was a true innovator, creator,  inventor and yes a PIONEER of "Rock & Roll". Absolute one of the first top 5 "Rock & Roll" Hall of fame inductees.Time or tide waits for no one, but its so sad that another legend has passed. I was lucky enough to see "Fats" close up and in concert a couple of times in NY back in the early &  mid-80's and he was great, Awesome as always. He stole the show! REST in PEACE "FATS "on Blueberry Hill and I thank you for ALL the music and memories you've given us.....Ain"t that a shame, Blueberry Hill, Blue Monday, Im Walkin', Josephine, I want to walk you home, Walking to New Orleans, I'm gonna be a wheel someday............RIP........."FATS".......
