What Will I Tell My Heart
Fats Domino Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm trying to explain to friends, dear
The reasons we two are apart
I know what to tell our friends, dear
But what can I tell my heart?
It's easy to say to strangers
That we played the game from the start
It's easy to lie to strangers
But what will I tell my heart?

[Chorus:]
When I smile to hide all the tears inside
What an ache it will be bring
Then I'll wander home to a telephone
That forgot how to ring, ring, ring

I'm telling you'll soon be back, dear
To fool the whole town may be smart
I'll tell them you'll soon be back, dear
But what will I tell my heart?

[Chorus]

I could say that you'll soon be back, dear
To fool the whole town may be smart

I'll tell them you'll soon be back, dear
But what will I tell my heart?

Overall Meaning

In the song "What Will I Tell My Heart" by Fats Domino, the singer is struggling to come to terms with the end of a relationship. While he can come up with excuses and explanations to give to their friends about why they are no longer together, he cannot explain it to his own heart. He realizes that it is easy to tell lies to strangers, but he cannot lie to his own emotions. The singer is pained by the fact that he must hide his true feelings behind a smile and pretend that everything is okay. He knows that when he returns home, he will be faced with the reality of the breakup and the loneliness that comes with it.

The song is a poignant reflection on the difficulty of moving on from a failed relationship. It highlights the dual nature of human emotions - the external face we present to the world, and the internal turmoil that we experience within ourselves. The singer's struggle to come up with an explanation that makes sense to his own heart is a common experience for many people who have gone through a difficult breakup.

If I may be so bold as to add to this illustrious thread. When I was at school in the late fifties in England we had a music teacher who encouraged us (possibly to his everlasting regret?) to bring some example of music from our homes. It could be an instrument to play, or a piece of written down music or even a record of music that we liked. Well I was limited in my instrumental abilities so I brought along a 78 rpm record (remember those?). It was Fats Domino singing "What will I tell my Heart". There was a respectful silence after the record finished (this was the 1950s), and then the teacher said, "thank you for your contribution but could you tell me why the singer was asking, "What will you tell my horse"? This is a true story and has made me smile ever since. You all listen and you'll see what I mean.

Also one of my 45, it is his singing, but Fats is also a great boogie pianist. As I told he's son, that time I saw them. It goes together. āœŠ
