Lulu
Fats Waller Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Gotta get my old tuxedo pressed, gotta sew a button on my vest,
'Cause tonight I've gotta look my best, Lulu's back in town.

Gotta get a half a buck somewhere, gotta shine my shoes and slick my hair,
Gotta get myself a boutonniere, Lulu's back in town.

You can tell all my pets, all my Harlem coquettes,
Mister Otis regrets, that he won't be aroun'.

You can tell the mailman not to call, I ain't comin' home until the fall
And I might not get back home at all... Lulu's back in town.

I used to mountain bike. And when I would go down this one particular mountain, this recording would run through my head. The rhythm, the joy of it, I can't explain it. It just fit. Fats Waller may be the single most underated musician of the 20th century.

@erikb2170

He influenced Louis Armstrong. Anyone who knows this knows that he shouldn’t be underrated.

@memonk11

@@erikb2170 maybe I should have said "underappreciated".

One of Thelonius Monk's influences as well. By, the way wasn't King Oliver was Louis Armstrong's idol.

That great comedian and entertainer, Redd Foxx, performed this tune on his TV show, Sanford and Son in the spirit of the original performance, a rollicking, fun romp through stride rhythm, diminished chords and lyrics that have me wanting to meet Lulu! I had to add this to my repertoire. It's just a blast to play on guitar. Thanks Redd for all the laughs.

@bellabdutch

I have no doubt that Fats Waller would have taken over the world had he not died at 39. What an effortless, huge talent.
