Two Sleepy People
Fats Waller Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here we are, out of cigarettes,
Holding hands and yawning,
Look how late it gets.
Two sleepy people by dawn's early light,
And too much in love to say goodnight.

Here we are, in a cozy chair;
Pickin' on a wishbone from the frigidaire.
Two sleepy people with nothing to say,
And too much in love to break away.

Do you remember the nights we used to linger in the hall?
Your father didn't like me at all.
Do you remember the reason why we married in the fall?
To rent this little nest and get a bit of rest.

Well, here we are just about the same,
Foggy little fella, drowsy little dame.

Two sleepy people by dawn's early light,
And too much in love to say goodnight.

Overall Meaning

The song "Two Sleepy People" by Fats Waller tells the story of a couple who are out of cigarettes, tired, and holding hands, but unable to say goodnight because they are too much in love with each other. They are portrayed as two people who have been together for a long time and have little to say to each other but are comfortable in each other's company. The mood of the song is dreamy, gentle and relaxed.

The first verse of the song sets the scene of the two characters being tired and out of cigarettes, which is a typical trope of many Jazz Age songs. The second verse talks about the couple sitting in a cozy chair picking the wishbone from the frigidaire. The third verse reflects on the past when they first got together and got married, explaining why they got married in the fall - to rent this little nest and get some rest.

The song is a sweet ballad that focuses on the comfort and ease of being in love with your partner. It also suggests the importance of finding joy in the simple and mundane things in life with your loved one.

Interpretations of this song may vary, but it is clear that "Two Sleepy People" is a celebration of love and companionship that persists through the ups and downs of life.

What a great song! I still have a 78 rpm copy of this (RCA Victor, 1938), which was recorded shortly after the song was composed by Hoagy Carmichael and Frank Loesser. The song was also performed in the movie "Thanks for the Memory" by Bob Hope and Shirley Ross. Unfortunately, Fats only lived on this earth for 39 years, dying in 1943.

Fabulous Fats. Thank you for all the pleasure you have brought into my life. From an 87 year old Englishman who grew up loving Fats and his music. Have got this recording on a double cd December, 2023.

Love the subtlety in Al Casey's playing behind the vocal, takes over from Fats' piano perfectly.

Music apart, this song’s lyrics is simply gorgeus. Very intimate.

My favorite version of this wonderful song.
