One of the most popular pop/jazz groups, Fattburger has been classified by some as new adult contemporary music, contemporary jazz , or smooth jazz . The San Diego-based unit has survived through many trends and still plays the same type of accessible funky music that was its original goal. Saxophonist Hollis Gentry, while in high school, led a group (Power) that opened for Cannonball Adderley at a college concert in 1972. After graduating, Gentry toured with R&B groups. He attended San Diego State University and during the second half of the 1970s had opportunities to play straight-ahead jazz with Bruce Cameron. When their last band broke up, Gentry and the other musicians (keyboardist Carl Evans, bassist Mark Hunter, drummer Kevin Koch, and guitarist [arist]Steve Laury) went out on their own and became Fattburger. Tommy Aros joined the band as their percussionist and in the early '90s, when Laury started a solo career, Evan Marks became Fattburger's guitarist. In the mid-'90s, Fattburger found a home on the Shanachie label, releasing a string of well-received albums into the 21st Century

FattBurger's greatest hits CD is how I learned that Steve was the guitarist of FattBurger years ago, now we are best friends. Steve is in my opinion the best Guitarist hands down & he said I was biased because we are good friends, but I assured him that was not the case. I've been playing for 50 years & in all that time I have never heard a guitarist play like Steve, soooo creative & a natural ingenious song writer. He told me once that he use to bring songs in for Carl to hear & Carl said, you have great song writing skills. Steve said he never had any plans to write songs. Just a natural talent. he said guitar was so easy for him to play, I told him it was his natural born talent, few have that talent. The very best Wes Montgomery octave player out there. No one plays them better, I mean NO ONE!. Steve sent me a song he redid 10 years ago but never released it. The best version I have ever heard on Michelle by the Beatles. I had to swear that I would never let anyone hear it. So I'm blessed being able to hear this ingenious touch to this Beatles song. You never want to stop listening to it, it's that great. If the Beatles heard it, they would give a big thumbs up. I'm going to visit him the middle of Oct. Really look forward to that visit. We get along like 2 peas in a pod. Going to spend a week there & hopefully not sweat to death. I'm going to buy one of his guitars from him, he has around 30 top of the line guitars, Fenders & Gibson's, the customs ones.They are very valuable now, he has had them for years. Never ever played or taken them out of the cases. He had around 150 guitars in his home & in his garage at one time. Steve always tells me he loves his fans because they made him what he is & of course being a superior Guitarist & song writer, certainly helped them come to that conclusion. Very humble man. I know I must of heard this song before, but its such a vague memory. Its as if I never actually heard it. I just got Serius XM, and listening to the Watercolors channel. This song came on and it is one great song.

Visited Steve last week, had a good time, got mega pics of his guitars, his house, studio, Dogs, cars, etc. Got one of his guitars signed & free & bought one of his strats, of course signed by the great one. Have pics of the Strat he used in all of FattBurgers songs with writing on the back signifying that he used it on all 9 Cd's with his signature. It was white at one point, but turned butter scotch over the years. Got a pic of his signature guitar. Have a video of him checking out his new Eric Johnson Fender semi hollow body guitar he got while we were there. Steve collects guitars, he has had over 1,000 guitars over the years. he is an expert on guitars. He also gave me his award that he & Ron Satterfield received for Keeping The Faith. I have it hanging on my wall. Love his Dogs, they are Corgi's. He loves those Dogs a lot. They are his family. It was 93% when we were there & 107% through the summer. He wants to move from there eventually. I want him to move up here by me. We talk every day on the phone & by email. You can check out the award on my FB page. Eventually I will put up his Strat he used on the FattBurger recordings. He keeps that strat under his bed.

Check this out, buy Steve's song "Walk your Walk" stick it in your thumper turn it up as loud as you can stand & cruise down the road, you'll feel like million bucks. It's what I do with all his songs in my Trans Am. It doesn't get any better than that. They all make you feel like that.
