Treeman
Fear Before Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm bleeding but I'm alive
I'm breathing but I could die
I can't explain why I'm made this way,
Tell me you see we are all the same,
When I look at you, I see all of you, not just the outside
Some people stare like my eyes aren't there,
I hope you see a piece of you in me,
Because when we look into the mirror,
Face could always be better, better better

I think I thought about who is I was...
Just the same!
But different!
But still the same kid!
I think I thought about who is I was...
Didn't like it!
So I changed it!
Call me shapeshifter!

There's nothing stranger than a stranger,
Strangely stranger than a stranger,
You frighten me with your fear of yourself
There's nothing stranger than a stranger,
Strangely stranger than a stranger,
Isn't it fun knowing we are so small?

I come around from time to time!
Just a little taste of what's to come!
I come around from time to time!
Just a little taste of what's to come!

(We stand strong while we can!
Come quickly! peel me off the glass)

I think I thought about who I was...
Just the same!
But different!
But still the same kid!
I think I thought about who is I was...
Didn't like it!
So I changed it!
What or not!?

If only you were camouflage, we could return to the trees,
But you and I both know, you could never leave the city

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song Treeman by Fear Before seem to address the theme of identity crisis and the struggle to find one's place in society. The opening lines, "I'm bleeding but I'm alive, I'm breathing but I could die," evoke the idea of living on the edge, where the slightest push could lead to a catastrophic fall. The singer reflects on his uniqueness and how he is made differently, yet he hopes others can see that they are all the same at the core. The next lines, "Some people stare like my eyes aren't there," could mean that people judge him solely on his outward appearances, without getting to know him as a person. The singer wants others to look beyond his physical body and see that he has the same emotions, fears, and desires as everyone else.

In the chorus, the singer highlights the paradox of human nature, where people can be both strangers and yet closely related. He talks about how strangers can be the strangest thing, yet simultaneously acknowledges that they all are insignificant before the immensity of the universe. In the bridge, the singer asserts his individuality, saying that he has thought about who he was and didn't like it, so he changed it. He has transformed himself into a shapeshifter, a person who can adapt to different situations and environments. The final lines, "If only you were camouflage, we could return to the trees, but you and I both know, you could never leave the city," portray the impossibility of going back to one's roots or origins.
