Drift
Fear of God Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do you ever think about tommorrow?
Do you ever think about yesterday?
Do you ever feel sorrow?
Over what you've left drift away?

Lie alone rotting...
Calling out for compassion...
For a final act...
They'll gladly pay...
You know you're just another...
Broken brother...
Scared sister... no one will ever miss you
Anyway.

Do you ever think about the otherside?
And who's waiting for you there?
I'll be waiting for you dear.
When they suck you in.

Waiting for the door to be kicked in
Waiting for my head to hit the ground
Waiting for my heart to stop beating

Yesterday is dead and gone tommorrow is out of sight
It's sad to be alone help me make it through the night.

You're lost in the drift
That's what you want isn't it?

You're lost in the drift
That's fucking tough isn't it?

You're lost in the drift
You get what you gave yes.

Overall Meaning

The song “Drift” by Fear of God talks about contemplating the past and the future, feeling sorrowful for letting things drift away, and ultimately getting lost in the drift, with no one to miss you or care about you. The lyrics make one think about the consequences of our actions and how we often take things for granted until it is too late. It is also about the fear of death and the unknown beyond that. It is a powerful message delivered with a raw and emotional sound that resonates deeply with the listener.

The first verse questions whether one ever thinks about yesterday or tomorrow, which implies that we often live in the moment without considering what has passed or what is to come. The second verse talks about someone who is alone and abandoned, looking for compassion and pleading for someone to care before it is too late. The repetition of “broken brother, scared sister, no one will ever miss you anyway” drives home the point that we are all alone in the end. The chorus talks about getting lost in the drift, accepting what we have given, and facing the consequences of our actions. The final verse talks about waiting for death and the afterlife, with someone waiting for us on the other side. The ending line “you get what you gave yes” is a direct reminder that we reap what we sow, and our actions have consequences.

Even though it's been years I'm stoked to see people are still digging this music. My dad was the drummer of this album and still plays and still kills it on the drums. Surprisingly found their music on an app I have and have been listening to it nonstop! I remember being a kid listening to them lay these tracks down not really understanding the music but now that I'm older I realize this shit rocked and still does. One of the best albums ever it's saddens me that Dawn choose to leave this earth too soon, what an amazing vocalist she was. RIP Dawn Crosby. Thanks for sharing their music and rock on!

One of my favorite albums back in the day, and one of few from the era I have to listen to it often. Brilliant work! Not as much a fan of Dawn with Toxic Voodoo, but that was probably due to her unfortunate drug use that ended up taking that talent from this world.

Thank your dad for me. This album saved my life.
