Emily
Fear of God Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Nocturnal shades of blue dance before her eyes.
and call to me pleading please don't lie.
In her darkest hour
Emily knows
the fate of whores...
who lie down...
and swear the sacred words.
Love was just something I did to survive
Love was just something I did to get by.

Like a circus clown with her painted frown.
Sun going down and the long night begins.
Harvest
Where will you run to now?
You've betrayed all who cared.
Harvest

Chorus

It never changes,
it goes round,
and round
round.

you've got the need I got you suck me or you rot.....

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Fear of God's song Emily depict the haunting tale of a woman named Emily who is in a state of distress. In the opening lines, the image of "nocturnal shades of blue" dancing before her eyes is presented. This sets the melancholic tone of the song while the plea from Emily that "please don't lie" adds a sense of desperation. The mention of fate that awaits "whores" in the darkest hour suggests that Emily is in a vulnerable state.

The subsequent lines, "Love was just something I did to survive, Love was just something I did to get by," have a resigned feel to them. The reference to love being a survival tactic implies that Emily's life has been tough, and she has had to do what it took to stay afloat. The line "like a circus clown with her painted frown" seems to suggest that Emily's bright exterior belies the melancholy that is underlying.

Next, the picture of the "sun going down" and "long night begins" is painted to evoke a sense of foreboding. The mention of the "harvest" and Emily's betrayal of the ones who cared is a poignant one. The chorus reinforces the sense of despair, stating that things never change, and life goes on in a vicious cycle.

I remember me and my buddies seeing Fear of God in Miami around 1991 ~ The one guy who I was with wrote for a German Metal fanzine. We met Fear of God when they came to the club around noon. My friend interviewed Dawn at her hotel room. My other buddy videoed the show later that night. After the gig we hung out in their tour bus. Fear of God was a great band. I remember Dawn, when she came to town was she wanted to eat Thai chicken and was joking about the movie "Scarface" and Tony Montana ~
