For some years, both musicians leisurely polish the demo of what will become a new band from the Montreal scene: Feathership. Their buddies join for the fun: Gregory Leclair-Paquet (ex-guitarist from the Stills and member of Plaza Musique), Mathieu Véziau (drummer for Mille Monarques and l'Indice) and Étienne Rocheleau (bassist member of l'Indice).
Feathership plunges us undoubtedly into an authentic musical universe where indie rock meets psych-folk. "Feathership is pretty much the contrast between lightness and loudness. There is a kind of softness, which flows throughout the songs, but always tied to a palpable tension in the background", admits front man Jean-Philippe Sauvé.
In January 2009, the band struck a deal with Maisonnette (Abd Al Malik, A. Désilets) and entered Masterkut Studios in Montreal generating a sound which recalls Donovan, Elliot Smith, and Fleet Foxes. The 6 songs of the self-titled debut-EP reveal many sounds from the 60's, and retain post-rock elements which are definitely modern. "The mood for the final recording was fantastic. Even though there was a quite a lot produced in our basements, they were many surprises until the end, and we discovered even more in the studio", said Jean-Philippe.

Everything's said
We'll stay late until the sun is in sight
I wasn't quite right
The bull was uptight
I was lost
I was unraveling fast
To the thoughts that you hold
To the grudges you hold
Well we're clinging to the edge of this
Love we want to build here for long
But now where do we go?
What's left to show?
You had a flowery dress
I had a powdery mess
Something we could dissolve
I miss you so
I miss you so
I miss you so
I hear the wind
Of the season we dreamed
We were lost, we were the traveling ones
I blew away
The rubble you made
I was asking way out of this scheme
Oh I'm still invited
To the thoughts that you hold
To the grudges you hold
Well you're clinging to a river now
Howl until you bite into love
Unfound or trailing there low
Will you behold?
I've got the willowing words
I've surveyed polls from your heart
I know I'll leave exposed
Life should be bold
Life should be bold
Life should be bold
Life should be bold
The song "Howl" by Feathership talks about the complexities and struggles of love. It starts with the main persona saying goodbye to someone while lowering their head, indicating that the relationship is over or reaching its end. However, they want to stay a little longer until the sun comes out. The persona was aware that they were not entirely in the right, and the person they were saying goodbye to was upset with them. As a result, they were lost and unraveling quickly, indicating that they were in some emotional turmoil.
Feathership then talks about feeling invited to the thoughts and grudges that the other person may be harboring, indicating that they still have some place in the other person's life, but it may not be healthy. They were clinging to the edge of the love they had, wanting to build it long term, but now they're left wondering where to go next and what to show for it. The persona then talks about how they each had something to offer, but it was time to dissolve it.
In the chorus, the persona talks about missing the other person while hearing the wind of the season when they were dreamers and traveling ones. The persona felt like they were blown away by the rubble the other person made while trying to get out of a scheme. The chorus ends with the persona talking about still feeling invited to the other person's thoughts and grudges.
The second verse begins with the other person clinging to a river, presumably indicating that they are holding onto some sort of pain or hurt. They need to howl until they can bite into love, indicating that they are holding themselves back from finding love. They are either unfound or trailing there low and need to behold something better. The bridge then talks about the persona having the willowing words, knowing the polls from the other person's heart, and saying they will leave exposed. The song ends with the final chorus talking about how life is supposed to be bold.
